A key piece to next year’s roster has confirmed her return.

Tuesday evening, Kentucky Women’s Basketball senior guard Robyn Benton announced that she will stick around in Lexington for her fifth and final year of college hoops. The 5-foot-9 native of Conyers, GA has spent the previous two seasons with the ‘Cats after transferring from Auburn. The deadline for a student-athlete to enter their name into the transfer portal was Sunday, with Tuesday the final day a school could process the request.

It was assumed that Benton would come back to Kentucky for one more season, but the confirmation and her excitement about the decision is always a welcome sign.

This is just the cherry on top for Elzy, who received two SEC transfers in Eniya Russell (South Carolina) and Ajae Petty (LSU) on Monday. The 2022-23 roster now has 14 of the 15 scholarship slots filled, featuring five returning players, six incoming freshmen, and a trio of transfers.

Benton has been a mainstay off the bench for head coach Kyra Elzy the past two seasons. In 2021-22, she averaged 8.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists over 25 games, including nine starts. Benton was one of the more consistently efficient players for Kentucky, shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, 37.3 percent from 3-point range, and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line while playing 24 minutes per outing.

She missed nearly a month of action from December through January due to an ankle injury. Heading into 2022-23, Benton expects to fill a big role on both ends of the floor.

Prior to her time at Kentucky, Benton played 52 career games with Auburn and was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2018-19. She came out of high school as a five-star prospect and top 20 recruit in the nation, according to ESPN.
