The Kentucky women’s basketball team got itself a winner, and her name is Jordy Griggs.

The Cats’ lone incoming freshman for next season concluded her high school career in style on Saturday, boosting her Montverde (FL) Academy squad to win its second-straight GEICO National Championship. The win wasn’t easy, either. Montverde overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat Long Island Lutheran 60-54.

Although Griggs wasn’t the star of the show — she finished with two points, three rebounds, and one assist in 10 minutes played — it’s impressive she even made the cast. Griggs’ Montverde squad is jam-packed with several Division I commits. Six of the team’s seven seniors are headed to Power 5 programs next season.

Kentucky head coach Kyra Elzy is thrilled to add Griggs to the roster.

“Fans will love the energy that she exudes on the court. Jordy has the potential to make an immediate impact on our program,” Elzy said in a press release after Griggs officially signed with UK. “She is a perfect fit for our system at Kentucky, and I simply cannot wait for her to get on campus next summer.”

Just the right fit

Griggs is the prototype player for a system like Elzy’s. Standing at 6-foot-2, Griggs can knock it down from downtown just as easily as she can dominate inside the arc. Griggs fits the combo-guard mold that Elzy has become known for.

Her combination of size and skill is reminiscent of other former Wildcats such as Blair Green, Jazmine Massengill and Rhyne Howard. According to MaxPreps, Griggs averaged 4.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in her senior year at Montverde Academy.

However, as a junior, Griggs averaged 21 points, 9.6 rebounds per game, 2.5 steals per game, 2.5 blocks per game and 2.3 assists per outing at Osborne High School in Marietta, GA; a more telling environment than the talent-loaded Montverde.

Griggs has competed at the highest level. Whether it’s playing for the high school national champions or Club Durant in the Nike EYBL Circuit, competition is nothing new to the California native. The soon-to-be Kentucky freshman will bring much-needed talent and experience to the ‘Cats.
