On a weekend full of action on the football field, the Kentucky women’s soccer team made a statement on the football pitch. The ‘Cats took on the LSU Tigers in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Sunday, the first time Kentucky made the tournament since 2020 and their first in the 10-team format since 2015.

After 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, the match remained goalless, but the No. 7 seed Kentucky squad (9-3-6, 3-3-4 SEC) ultimately pulled away from the No. 10 seed Tigers (8-7-4, 3-5-2 SEC) in a penalty shootout, 4-2.

Kentucky’s goalkeeper, Marz Josephson, came up huge for the ‘Cats, denying six shots to keep her team in it before entering into penalty kicks.

The ‘Cats will now advance to the second round of the SEC tournament. They will face the No. 2 seed Georgia in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Kentucky lost to Georgia during the regular season back on October 19th by a score of 1-0. That marked only their second loss of the season, having lost to Mississippi State prior to that.

Kentucky has been ranked as high as 18th in the country this season and looks to keep marching through the SEC Tournament. Go ‘Cats.
