The University of Kentucky continues to pump out elite-level track & field stars.

On Friday afternoon at the Red Raider Open in Lubbock, TX, UK sprinter Masai Russell set a new women’s collegiate record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds, nearly a quarter-second faster than the second-place finisher in the same race, Texas Tech’s Demisha Roswell (7.98). Russell almost broke the school record in the 60m hurdles last week at the 2023 Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, coming .01 seconds short of Keni Harrison’s record (7.87 seconds) with a time of 7.88, which Russell officially surpassed on Friday.

Kentucky senior Yasmin Brooks finished behind Russell in fifth place with a time of 8.17 seconds.

Since early December, it’s been a steady improvement in the 60m hurdles for Russell when she clocked a time of 8.13 seconds and 8.11 seconds on Dec. 3. The graduate student continued to chip away at her time, going down from 8.09 to 7.92 to 7.88 during last week’s Rod McCravy Memorial event in Lexington before setting the collegiate record on Friday.

Kentucky football’s Jordan Anthony is also very fast

Russell isn’t the only speedster on campus, though. Kentucky football freshman wide receiver Jordan Anthony came to Lexington as a four-star recruit on the gridiron, but he’s making a significant impact with the track & field program, as well.

Anthony won the Red Raider 60m dash in Lubbock with a time of 6.55 seconds, lowering his own UK freshman record in the process while coming up just .01 seconds short of the program’s overall record held by former Olympian Tim Harden. Anthony clocked a time of 6.57 seconds in the 60m dash at last week’s Rod McCravy Memorial.
