Allow me to share the three most beautiful words in the English language: Football is back. No, this isn’t just practice or a scrimmage. Real college football games are happening on Saturday and it will be glorious.

Okay, “glorious” might be a little over the top. It is just Week 0, the late-August appetizer for college football season. There are only five games on the schedule, but they’re spaced evenly thourough the day, starting with a doozy.

The college football world will get a formal introduction to Farmageddon when No. 17 Kansas State and No. 22 Iowa State meet in Dublin. The series is nearly tied after 104 meetings, but Matt Campbell has won four of five for the Cyclones. The two Top 25 teams have star power returning at quarterback. Rocco Becht broke Brock Purdy passing records last fall, but lost two of his top targets to the NFL Draft. Avery Johnson is a mobile athlete with five-star pedigree who could take a massive leap forward in his second year as Kansas State’s full-time starter.

Last year’s Week 0 game in Dublin provided plenty of drama, even if hindsight told us that beating Florida State wasn’t really that big of an upset. The Big 12 produces chaos on a weekly basis. These might be the two best teams to meet in Week 0. Hopefully, they brought their fireworks to Dublin.

Week 0 Schedule

Dan Mullen is making his Las Vegas debut with the Runnin’ Rebs, and I’m going to have a conniption because the game isn’t being broadcast on regular TV. You must live in the area and get Silver State Sports or subscribe to the Mountain West Network to watch. The college football world finally gets to see Dan Mullen act like a cartoon character on the sideline in Vegas, and we can’t watch it? What’s the point of Week 0 if we don’t get to see Dan roll the dice against an FCS foe?

Noon: Iowa State (+3) vs. Kansas State, ESPN
4:00: Idaho State (+30.5) at UNLV, Mountain West Network
6:30: Fresno State (+14) at Kansas, FOX
7:00: Sam Houston (+9.5) at WKU, CBSSN
7:30: Stanford (+2.5) at Hawaii, Paramount+

That’s right, Stanford is an underdog on the Big Island. It’s also officially Football Time in the Bluegrass with a home game in Bowling Green.

High School Football Returns

The action on the gridiron began across the Commonwealth on Friday night. KSR had boots on the ground in Lexington, where South Warren took care of business in a 56-35 victory over Bryan Station. Lopsided victories were the name of the game in week one of Kentucky high school football. Male, Manual, St. X, CAL, and Trinity won by a combined score of 235-14.

There was one amazing exception. A battle of Top 15 teams went to double overtime in Northern Kentucky. Hosting Frederick Douglass, Highlands went for two and the win. They put the ball in Tayden Lorenzen’s hands. Wearing No. 22, the junior quarterback punched in the game-winning conversion to secure a 21-20 victory.

More Kentucky High School Football Scores

Danville snapped a 23-game losing streak by knocking off Fort Knox 49-12. Allow me to share a few other eye-opening scores from the first edition of Friday Night Lights.

Ballard 19, Lexington Catholic 6
Ryle 26, Cov Cath 20
Bardstown 39, ETown 36
Belfry 55, East Carter 28
Franklin County 54, Great Crossing 21
LCA 41, North Hardin 21
Murray 48, Apollo 34
Pineville 76, Phelps 40
Valley 30, Eastern 28

There are more than a dozen games still on the slate for Saturday, including the Rafferty’s Bowl in Bowling Green.

An Off Day for Kentucky Football

The preseason scrimmages are in the books. Kentucky has entered game mode one week away from the opener against Toledo. This weekend is one final opportunity to let their bodies rest and get their mind right. While they enjoy some time away from the gridiron, see how they cut loose during a Fall Camp team-bonding trip.

Kentucky Basketball Catches Views

The Wildcats returned to campus to begin the fall semester. Before hitting the gym, the team hit the road to one of our state’s greatest treasures. Mark Pope’s Wildcats spent the day exploring Natural Bridge State Park.

Watch Kentucky Volleyball in Action

The college volleyball season began on Friday night with a doubleheader in Lincoln between Top 25 teams. Craig Skinner’s Cats begin the season ranked No. 7. They’ll get their first test with an exhibition match against Ohio State. The action begins at 5 PM ET inside Historic Memorial Coliseum.

Sovereignty Races for History in the Travers Stakes

The Midsummer Derby is typically one of the best races of the year. Unfortunately, Sovereignty has scared away all of the competition. The Kentucky Derby winner only has four foes in today’s Travers Stakes. It will be hard to make money betting on the big favorite, but he could make history with a win.

The Travers is one of four Grade I races at Saratoga. Thorpedo Anna will face off against some of the nation’s top fillies in the Personal Ensign. The 7-furlong Jerkens Memorial has a loaded field. Patch Adams has dominated the division, but Verifire, Chancer McPatrick, Captain Cook, Madaket Road, and Barnes provide plenty of enticing wagering options.
