Good morning, folks! How did everyone spend their Week 0 Saturday? Personally, I didn’t get to watch any of the action, but I sure did see that Nebraska completely blew it against Northwestern, which brought a bit of a smile to my face. Any day that Scott Frost has a bad day, is a good day for everyone else.

Games were played all over the country on Saturday as the 2022 college football season kicked off it’s opening weekend. Western Kentucky won its Week 0 matchup, as the Hilltoppers hosted Austin Peay in a 38-27 victory for WKU. Also, how about Vanderbilt? The Commodores smacked Hawai’i 63-10 in the late-night, sickos-only game. A three-win season is within reach for Vandy!

Now we turn our attention to Week 1, the true beginning of college football, which gets rolling on Thursday and doesn’t stop until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Plenty of ranked teams will take the field next weekend, including the one you’re here to read about. Kentucky is now just six days away from hosting Miami (OH) at Kroger Field on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Here’s what else you need to know to get your Sunday off to a good start.

Volleyball looks to bounce back

After dropping the season opener on Friday to Marquette, No. 11 Kentucky volleyball will have a chance to close out the weekend on a high note. The Wildcats will face Ohio at 4:00 p.m. EST inside Memorial Coliseum. Admission is free of charge.

In the opener against Marquette, Kentucky narrowly dropped the first two sets of action, falling 25-21 in set one before losing 25-22 in the second set. From there, the ‘Cats rebounded in ways that were reminiscent of last season’s squad. UK trounced Marquette 25-18 in the third set and then 25-16 in the fourth set.

However, the momentum finally wore out in a decisive 15-point, fifth set. Kentucky did all it could to keep the Golden Eagles from building a sizable lead, but couldn’t complete the comeback, dropping the final set 15-12. The overall statistics on the night were fairly even, but a 2-0 hole to open the first match of the season proved too much to overcome.

Let’s see if they can bounce back later today.

Elsewhere on campus, the women’s soccer team will host Eastern Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. EST on the SEC Network+. The game will be played at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. Kentucky is off to a 3-0 start to the 2022 season, outscoring opponents 9-2 through the first week of the schedule.

Kendrick Gilbert committing this morning

Could Mark Stoops add another four-star recruit to his 2023 recruiting class? We’ll know for sure in just 90 minutes.

Top 200 prospect Kendrick Gilbert will make his college decision at 11:30 a.m. EST live on his Instagram account. He’s down to a final four of Purdue, LSU, Kentucky, and Iowa. Considered a Top 25 defensive lineman in the country according to On3, Gilbert is believed to be deciding between Purdue and Kentucky.

But if we want to read into the tea leaves, the Boilermakers might have the edge heading down the final stretch. Gilbert has picked up predictions in favor of him choosing Purdue from the likes of 247Sports and Rivals over the last 14 hours.

We’ll know soon enough…

Awesome moment from UK commit Jakob Dixon

After a strong performance at a recruiting camp in June, Louisville (Ky.) Pleasure Ridge Park WR/TE Jakob Dixon earned a committable offer from the Kentucky coaching staff. The local product decided to end his recruitment in July with a commitment to Kentucky.

At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Dixon logged a 4.5-second 40-yard dash and flashed some very good ball skills. The versatile skill talent weapon might be the most improved player in the state as the rising senior has played a key part in PRP’s hot start as the Panthers have outscored foes 114-0 to start the season. After scoring two touchdowns last week, Dixon made one of the most selfless plays you will ever see.

KSR’s Jack Pilgrim is at Fantasy Camp

The Players First Fantasy Experience is taking place this weekend in Lexington, where grown adults gather to live the life of a Kentucky basketball player for the weekend. In short, you show up, get a duffle bag of gear and play five-on-five games for three days with the current Wildcats serving as coaches.

After making his Fantasy Experience debut last year, KSR’s Jack Pilgrim is back for a sophomore campaign, this time drafted by Antonio Reeves, Adou Thiero, and Grant Darbyshire. Longtime college basketball coach Jerry Wainwright is Jack’s General Manager.

On the court, it’s been a mixed bag of results for Mr. Jack Pilgrim, but he’s being asked to use those fresh young legs more than his teammates. We’ll cut him slack for taking on the extra load of minutes. His team actually took down fellow KSR employee Dr. Michael Huang in the semifinals this morning, meaning Jack is set to play in the championship later today.

If you want to know more about what the experience has been like, read up on Jack’s breakdown from yesterday here. After the games on Saturday were over, the men’s basketball team hosted a game of Family Feud for charity.

That’s everything I’ve got for you this morning. There are a couple of preseason NFL games on this afternoon if those interest you. Wan’Dale Robinson’s New York Giants take the field at 1:00 p.m. EST.
