Good morning, folks! And an extra good morning to University of Kentucky students. Today is your final day of summer break before the 2022 fall semester begins on Monday. Some of you might be embarking on your very first day of the college experience, while for others this might be your “last” first day of school. A record-setting 3,000-plus freshmen are expected to flood the UK campus in less than 24 hours.

As someone who’s now four years removed from my time at UK, all I’ll say is to make sure you enjoy every second of it. The new Two Keys should be open soon, too, so there will plenty to enjoy.

Now, who wants to talk some football? We’ve only got two more Sundays left in the year before Kentucky takes Kroger Field.

Following Saturday’s scrimmage, head coach Mark Stoops, quarterback Will Levis, and defensive tackle Octavious Oxendine spoke with the media to talk about where the team is at with under two weeks until opening kickoff.

Stoops opened the afternoon praising his team’s efforts in the scrimmage, saying there was “some good, some bad,” but stressing he had a “good nucleus and a good team.” He also shed light on the running back position, wide receiver play, Jordan Dingle emerging at the tight end position, Will Levis’ growth, the backup quarterbacks, and more.

Check out what all three Wildcats had to say.

There was no final decision handed from Stoops on the Chris Rodriguez situation either, although the belief is that a 3-4 game suspension is coming sometime this week. Additionally, Kentucky could be without one of its defensive starters for the season-opener against Miami (OH), which is linked to the Rodriguez situation, according to KSR’s Matt Jones.

9-game SEC slate coming soon?

Kentucky was one of the schools during June’s SEC Media Days against a nine-game intraconference model, wanting to keep the scheduling flexibility that is available with eight conference games. After a week of discussions, there was an even split between the two options.

That appears to be changing nearly three months later. ESPN’s Chris Low reports that members of the league are pushing for the nine-game slate. That would mean three permanent opponents for every SEC team with the other 12 schools rotating off schedules on an every-other-year basis.

Kentucky MBB set to host Yale

Kentucky basketball’s non-conference schedule for the 2022-23 season is coming together quite nicely. After recently adding a home-and-home series with Gonzaga, the Wildcats have added another home matchup against a new squad of Bulldogs in Yale.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports was the first to break the news.

Kentucky has only played Yale once in history, a 79-58 victory over the Bulldogs back on December 27, 1961. Larry Pursiful led the Wildcats with 25 points in the win, followed by Carroll Burchett and Cotton Nash with 16 points apiece. UK would go on to the Elite Eight that year.

Benny Snell scored a touchdown in preseason action

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett tossed an easy ball to former Kentucky running back Benny Snell for an 11-yard score in a 16-15 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Snell carried the ball three times for the Steelers, although he lost a total of two yards on those runs. However, he was targeted three times out of the backfield, hauling in two catches for 15 yards and the touchdown.

FINAL DAY FOR INTERN APPLICATIONS

Today is your final chance to apply for KSR’s college student internship program. The deadline to apply is tonight at 7:00 p.m. EST. Interested? Here’s what you need to know.

KSR is offering a wide variety of opportunities for potential interns. Beat writer positions for the following sports will be available with one intern covering each specific team: Baseball, softball, and volleyball. Additionally, KSR is looking for a high school beat writer who will follow both high school basketball and football throughout the season. During the football season, this intern will cover football games in person alongside KSR’s football expert Freddie Maggard.

On the video side, KSR is searching for a video production intern who can cover media opportunities, put together highlight packages, create social media clips, and more. This intern will be able to work with the On3 video team, which employs several knowledgeable, full-time workers. They will also have the opportunity to attend basketball and football recruiting events for highlight and interview purposes.

How To Apply

  1. Cover letter explaining why you’re interested in working with KSR
  2. Updated resume
  3. At least two writing samples if applying for the beat writer position and at least two video samples if applying for the video production position
  4. Your availability during the upcoming college semester

Send all of the above to [email protected] to submit your application.

That’s all I’ve got for you all this morning. Now get out there and enjoy your Sunday.
