KSR Today: Kentucky is Prepping Two Quarterbacks

What’s the saying about two quarterbacks? We don’t need to get into that, even though that seems to be the case for the Kentucky Wildcats as they prepare to play host to Eastern Michigan on Saturday at Kroger Field.

Even though the season is young, the passing attack has been putrid through two games. Mark Stoops made it clear during his call-in show that he wants Cutter Boley to have an opportunity to play against the MAC school. However, the Wildcats have not named a starter for Saturday’s game. In fact, a new wrinkle was added to the situation on Tuesday night.

Boley first entered the game against Ole Miss after Zach Calzada injured his throwing shoulder. For a moment, we thought it might send him to the sideline for an extended period of time, but the seventh-year journeyman returned to practice after taking a day off on Monday.

“He’s a tough competitor,” said Kentucky offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan. “We’re in position to have both guys ready to go with equal practice reps and getting them both ready to go. We know we got to play better at all levels, and so both those guys will be ready to go.”

What exactly will it look like? Expect the unexpected the next time Kentucky takes the field.

We have a Cutter Boley Song

You know what this “quarterback controversy” needed? A song from Kentucky Joe. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered.

A Fired Up Kentucky Offensive Coordinator

Bush Hamdan is typically reserved in his comments. It’s difficult to describe, but he’s just not a very animated person behind the podium. It makes it hard to get a read on Kentucky’s play-caller. That was not the case following Tuesday’s practice.

As the offense has struggled, Hamdan has been on the receiving end of a ton of criticism, including from yours truly. He responded to that criticism by saying multiple times that he believes this can be a “damn good” Kentucky offense.

“We got to be at our best when our best is needed. Everybody included. It starts with me. We’ve been here before at Kentucky,” said Hamdan.

I’m not sitting here under my table hiding. We got a chance to be a very good football team, a very good offense, and we got 40 guys who believe that, and that ultimately, right now, is all that matters.”

REMINDER: No Injury Report

During SEC play, each Wednesday night will provide some insight into who is in and who is out. Saturday is a non-conference game, which means we will NOT be sprinting to the SEC Availability Reports this evening. We can say that Kentucky will likely be without starting cornerback DJ Waller for a second straight game.

We’ll also get another chance to hear from Mark Stoops on the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference. Those updates will roll in after lunchtime.

Another Top 10 Kentucky Volleyball Matchup

The Kentucky volleyball schedule is not for the faint of heart. In the opening weekend of the season, the Wildcats took two sets off top-ranked Nebraska before falling in five. They followed that up by sweeping a Top-5 Penn State team on the night the Nittany Lions hung their National Championship banner. It’s not getting any easier.

Kentucky is hitting the road to Ft. Worth to take on No. 7 Pitt in another nationally-televised game on ESPN. Pitt has been to four straight Final Fours. Can the Wildcats slay another giant in the world of college volleyball? The first serve is scheduled for 6:30 PM ET on ESPN.

More Details on the New Kentucky Basketball Practice Facility

Champions Blue LLC. held a board meeting on Tuesday that laid the foundation for plans for a new Kentucky basketball practice facility. We are still in the very early stages of this process. The goal is not to just create a new building for the men’s basketball program, but to incorporate it with the new proposed entertainment district.

“It’s not just that,” Barnhart said of the timing of the basketball practice facility on Tuesday. “I think people are supremely focused on that because obviously that is the headline piece, but the reason that we’re in conversation is because we’re talking about an incredible multi-use district that gives us a chance to anchor a variety of thoughts and processes into one concept.

“I don’t know that this (gym) happens singularly, if we do it by itself — or if we do anything by itself. But to have an opportunity to wrap things around it and create an energy about it of different things is a wonderful thing to think about.”

Jack Pilgrim attended the meeting and shared more details about the proposed project in a new edition of Sources Say.
