Good morning, friends. We’ve made it to the start of the final week of fall training camp in Lexington. Mark Stoops and the Wildcats are grinding through the dog days with kickoff against Toledo less than two weeks away. By this time next week, we’ll officially be in game week.

Across the country, Week 0 of college football arrives this Saturday, giving us our first real, live action after a long offseason of talking. The Cats aren’t playing just yet, but football is in the air everywhere you turn.

It’s shaping up to be a big week in Big Blue Nation, with news and notes from Kroger Field and beyond. Let’s dive into the headlines you need to start your Monday.

Final week of training camp

Kroger Field hosted Kentucky’s second preseason intrasquad scrimmage over the weekend, in which the defense took a step forward from the previous scrimmage. Improved tackling led the headlines from this past Saturday’s work, leading Mark Stoops to say afterward, “Defensively, stepped up. Just clean. Just good ball.”

On the offensive side, Kentucky’s top two running backs rested on the sideline for a second consecutive Saturday. The reason behind each of their absences is unclear. On the plus side, Kendrick Law debuted at camp, just in time for the final week of the preseason, beginning today.

A break in football for a team retreat

Before Saturday’s scrimmage, the team snuck off for a mid-camp team retreat at the lake. @UKFootball shared several photos from the getaway, including shots of Shiyazh Pete jumping onto the Blob and Mark Stoops playing Golden Tee. The trip was to “continue to grow our family bond and togetherness,” the post read.

Mark Stoops at the Louisville kickoff luncheon

Mark Stoops will step away from Golden Tee and fall camp today for the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club’s annual Wildcat Kickoff Luncheon. Stoops will make his routine appearance at the preseason fundraiser in Louisville, and KSR will be on the scene for anything Stoops shares with attendees. Really, Nick Roush goes for the free food. He’ll tell you all about it later today.

Jelavic spotted with Pope in Ohio, finally on campus

Big news in an otherwise slow time around Kentucky basketball: Andrija Jelavic was spotted with Mark Pope in Cincinnati, watching the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament’s semifinals on Saturday. Jelavic’s tennis date with Pope confirmed that the 6’9” Croatian has arrived in the United States and, presumably, is ready for the fall semester, which begins next week, and the start of basketball practice in September.

If the tennis photo didn’t convince you, Jelavić posted a couple of photos from the Joe Craft Center to his Instagram Story on Sunday night.

Also in Ohio: Sinner vs. Alcaraz again

Speaking of the Cincinnati Open, today’s final of the men’s draw is a must-see event for tennis fans. It’s No. 1 Jannik Sinner versus No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz meeting for the fourth straight time in a tournament final, most recently, the Wimbledon final. They play again for the title in Cincinnati, beginning at 3 p.m. on Tennis Channel.

Fortner and Young teaming up in New Orleans

The biggest Kentucky-related news out of the NFL’s preseason is that Luke Fortner is heading to New Orleans, where he will join his old Big Blue Wall teammate, Landon Young. Liam Coen and the Jaguars shipped Fortner to the Saints for a defensive tackle.

Elsewhere, Deone Walker looked good again for Buffalo in the Bills’ 38-0 loss to Chicago. Ray Davis did not kick a PAT in the loss.

You can watch Chris Rodriguez and the Commanders versus the Bengals tonight on ESPN.
