NCAA Lays Down the NIL Law

Well, not really. The four-letter governing organization of college athletics sent out a sternly worded memo that essentially says, “You better stop, or else!”

The NCAA let the Name, Image and Likeness cat out of the bag 11 months ago without too many restrictions at all. It allowed boosters to organize NIL collectives that have not been shy about their pay-for-play scheme. Tennessee’s collective has spent all offseason bragging about their pay-for-play success to The Athletic. After months of public complaints from coaches at all levels, the new NIL guidelines seek to crack down on the pay-for-play strategy from collectives. Will they move quickly enough to enforce these guidelines? Probably not. Will the most brazen boosters be punished for anything that happened over the last 11 months? Doubtful. But it sounds like the collectives will have to tread water carefully in the immediate future.

Al Horford Killed the Greek Freak

Did you know Al Horford can still dunk? Neither did I, until the 35-year-old put Giannis in a bodybag Monday night. Rest in Peace, Mr. Antetokounmpo.

Horford turned back the clock to score a team-high 30 points, propelling the Celtics to a 116-108 victory to even the series at 2-2. Out on the West Coast the Warriors took care of business, winning 101-98 to take a 3-1 lead over the Grizzlies.

Big Game for Bam and Herro

The home team has held serve throughout the Heat-Sixers series. However, Game 5 tonight will be the first game Joel Embiid has played in Miami. A win tonight could ultimately swing the series. Bam Adebayo has the tall task of slowing down Embiid, while Tyler Herro is questionable with an ankle injury. The action tips off at 7:30 pm ET on TNT. Devin Booker’s Suns will host the Mavs in the nightcap at 10 pm ET.

WKU Big Man Stays Put

The nation’s top shot-blocker will in fact remain in Bowling Green. Jamarion Sharp announced he will return to Western Kentucky University after dipping his toes in the transfer portal. The 7-foot-5 center averaged 4.6 blocked shots per game last year. Remember when Oscar Tshiebwe broke the Rupp Arena rebounding record against Sharp? That was neat.

This Magic Moment

One paddock patron at Churchill Downs captured the moment Rich Strike’s connections saw the horse cross the finish line first at Kentucky Derby 148. Trainer Eric Reed, in red, was too overwhelmed with his emotions to stay on his feet. This is joy in its purest form.

Bat Cats are Back

Fresh off a series win over No. 1 Tennessee, Nick Mingione’s Kentucky baseball team returns to action Tuesday night at Kentucky Proud Park. First pitch against UT-Martin is set for 6:30 pm ET. One of only five home games remaining on the schedule, get out there and see the Bat Cats on a beautiful night for baseball.

Shout Out Montgomery County

Some of the best and brightest future trial lawyers call Kentucky home. Montgomery High School is bringing the National High School Mock Trial Championship back to the Bluegrass after dominating the competition in Kalamazoo. Congrats!
