KSR Today: Selection Sunday, Gonzaga leftovers and WBB
Crossover season is over with football wrapping up its disappointing season and moving forward with a new era under Will Stein — Kentucky missing out on bowl eligibility, but BBN still getting to follow along with Oregon’s run with Stein calling plays in the College Football Playoff. That’ll be fun, with the Ducks and the rest of the six-plus-win teams finding out their postseason fates on Selection Sunday, the CFP committee revealing the 12-team bracket at noon ET, followed by all 35 bowl matchups throughout the afternoon.
The other part of that crossover is taking a much-needed break after taking the 35-point loss in Nashville, men’s basketball returning to game action on Tuesday against NC Central — by far the worst team on the schedule, according to KenPom — before the real stuff comes back Saturday vs. No. 22 Indiana. Those Wildcats need some life in the worst way, a come-to-Jesus reflection that their way is not working and a hard reset is necessary after starting the year 5-4 with zero wins of substance and the window closing on a turnaround. Time is there, obviously, but it can also work against you by digging a hole too deep, too quickly, with dirt being dumped on top of you at the very bottom. There is a chance this gets worse before it gets better.
It’s on Mark Pope to figure things out, and unfortunately, beating the *checks notes* Eagles by a thousand on Tuesday will do nothing to make people feel better. All eyes are on the Hoosiers, then Rick Pitino and the St. John’s Red Storm, before SEC play begins in January. Win both? Maybe you can start seeing it all come together. Lose one or both? Oh boy.
Selection Sunday for CFP
Championship Saturday brought some movement up top ahead of Selection Sunday with the bracket rollout coming here in a few hours. There was no result bigger than No. 2 Indiana defeating No. 1 Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship to all but solidify the top seed in the CFP.
- Big 12 Championship: No. 4 Texas Tech 34, No. 11 BYU 7
- MAC Championship: Western Michigan 23, Miami (OH) 13
- SEC Championship: No. 3 Georgia 28, No. 9 Alabama 7
- ACC Championship: Duke 27, Virginia 20 (OT)
- Big Ten Championship: No. 2 Indiana 13, No. 1 Ohio State 10
The complete College Football Playoff field will be announced at noon ET on ESPN, followed by all of the bowl matchups coming out throughout the afternoon and evening. Where will Will Stein’s Ducks fall? On3’s Brett McMurphy and Andy Staples both have Oregon earning the No. 5 seed with a first-round matchup, the former picking a first-round matchup vs. James Madison and the latter going with Duke.
Kentucky won’t be playing, but still plenty to keep an eye on until the transfer portal opens up in January.
WBB takes on Central Michigan
Kenny Brooks and his 9-1 Wildcats are set to take on the Chippewas in Lexington this afternoon, tip-off scheduled for noon ET on SEC Network+. Central Michigan is 5-3 on the year and is coming off an 82-40 loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor with wins over Davenport, Butler, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Illinois and Purdue. Coached by Kristin Haynie, the Chippewas average 63.3 points per game on 41/34/68 shooting splits.
For Kentucky, it’s a chance to keep the momentum coming off the 64-48 loss at Miami (FL) in the ACC/SEC Challenge with only one slip-up this season vs. No. 7 Maryland.

Things aren’t going well for the men, but the women are doing just fine with just four non-conference matchups remaining before the fun stuff begins in the SEC. Can Brooks lead the Cats to a league title before making a deep March Madness run? That’s the hope.
UK VB earns Thursday/Saturday draw
Speaking of NCAA Tournament runs, the No. 1 seed Kentucky Wildcats are doing just that in volleyball, steamrolling through the first two rounds to advance to the Sweet 16 this past weekend. First, it was a 3-0 sweep against Wofford, followed by a 3-1 win over UCLA to advance to the second weekend.
Now, we have next week’s schedule confirmed as Craig Skinner’s group continues its Final Four push with a very real shot at bringing a second national championship home to Lexington.
