KSR Today: There's a whole lot going on right now

It’s a very busy Monday morning as we look back on Kentucky Basketball’s Sunday afternoon in London and ahead to Kentucky Fooball’s offensive coordinator search and postseason play. A new O.C. could be announced as soon as today and we have some news breaking right this moment about Kentucky’s rival in Louisville.

Let’s get right to it or I’m going to be late to the radio show…

Kentucky Basketball survives London

It wasn’t perfect, especially not at the free throw line, but Kentucky Basketball got the job done against Michigan in London and that’s all that matters: the win. John Calipari’s Wildcats are now 6-2 on the year with the first good win for the resume, a 73-69 victory over the Wolverines in London’s O2 Arena.

Cason Wallace and Jacob Toppin led the team in scoring with 14 apiece, one better than Oscar Tshiebwe’s 13 points and 12 rebounds. Wallace got there by hitting a 3-pointer with a minute to go to put Kentucky up five and Toppin help finish the job with two important free throws.

Read the numbers behind the dub.

John Calipari, Oscar Tshiebwe, and Cason Wallace recap the win from London

Tyler Thompson and Steven Peake spoke about the game from London’s O2 Arena, too.

New AP College Basketball Poll

Later today, we will see what Kentucky’s win versus Michigan did for its ranking in the AP and Coaches Polls. The new Top 25s will be released around lunchtime and the Wildcats are hoping to see a climb up from No. 19/18 in the rankings.

Kentucky Football to the Music City Bowl to play Iowa again

Moments after Kentucky Basketball secured its first big win of its young season, we learned the fate of Kentucky Football’s bowl game destination and matchup, and it’s the worst situation imaginable. Not only did Kentucky accept a Music City Bowl spot without a fight, the Wildcats will also play an extremely rare bowl game rematch from a year ago (they try to avoid those, you know) by drawing Iowa out of the Big Ten.

Even worse, the Music City Bowl will kick off on December 31 at noon, the exact same time Kentucky Basketball hosts Louisville in Lexington for their annual rivalry game. Matt Jones says UK did not push back on the unbelievably inconvenient and uninteresting bowl matchup because it’s what the football program wanted.

So, another game against Iowa and a head-to-head with basketball, it is. Isn’t this the last thing Mitch Barnhart should want after his athletic department’s offseason drama? Now fans actually have to pick a side if they plan to attend (or don’t have a two-TV setup at home). UK made it to where many people won’t go to either so they can watch both, me included.

Nick Roush, Adam Luckett, and I were not happy with the news.

Mondays with Mark is back to preview the Music City Bowl

After a week off to meet with his players and staff, Mark Stoops returns to the Monday podium to preview Kentucky Football’s postseason. Stoops will go live at noon to discuss the Music City Bowl and why Kentucky wanted to play in a game fans hate, plus the latest around his coaching searches and everything else.

KSR will be in attendance for all of Stoops’ Monday comments and we’ll report them back to you as soon as we can, so stick around for afternoon football updates from the head coach.

Kentucky is an underdog in the Music City and the under can’t get low enough

According to the Action Network, Kentucky opened as a 1.5-point underdog in its bowl rematch with the Hawkeyes. A battle of two of the nation’s best defenses and worst offenses, the total on the game opened at 33.5 points.

Give me that under.

Kentucky’s Offensive Coordinator search near its end?

There is lots of speculation that Mark Stoops has his new OC and a decision will be announced soon, as soon as today or tomorrow, says KSR’s own Matt Jones:

Liam Coen is the hope and the buzz has been positive around Coen’s candidacy in the last few days, so maybe Stoops was able to pull Coen back out of L.A. to come home to the Bluegrass.

We’ll tell you as soon as it’s official, so keep refreshing KSR for more updates and breaking news.

Scott Satterfield to Cincinnati????!!!!

Early this morning when I was about halfway done with all of this Monday morning writing, news broke that Scott Satterfield is leaving Louisville to become the head coach at Cincinnati. The shocking development from the college football coaching carousel pulls Satterfield away from the Governor’s Cup, where we had hoped Satterfield would stay forever, and puts him on the other side of the Fenway Bowl where Louisville and Cincinnati are set to play this postseason.

This is wild. And we’ll miss him

Louisville Basketball really sucks

They’re so bad. On Sunday, the Cards hosted Miami in front of a couple people in the KFC Yum! Center, only to lose to the Hurricanes, 80-53.

Louisville is now 0-7 overall and 0-7 against the spread.

More Quick Hitters

KENTUCKY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

While Kentucky Men’s Basketball was building confidence Sunday afternoon, Kentucky’s women’s team got the job done at home against UNC Greensboro, winning 82-56 to move to 6-1 this season. Jada Walker scored 20 points with four assists while shooting 7-9 from the field and 5-6 from the line in the win.

KENTUCKY VOLLEYBALL

The NCAA Volleyball Tournament is underway and Craig Skinner’s Wildcats survived a two-round homestand in Lexington to advance to the Palo Alto Regional. On Sunday, ESPN announced 12th-seeded Kentucky will play its next opponent, No. 2 San Diego, in the first match of the regional at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, Dec. 8 on ESPNU.

MEDICINAL WHISKEY CHARITY

You still have time to enter the Medicinal Whiskey Charity’s sweepstakes for one of three Booker’s Single Barrel Bourbons signed by Fred Noe. The proceeds benefit the UK Organ Transplant Center and the lucky winners of the sweepstakes will own a bottle that won’t be found on store shelves, and the first ever single barrel from Booker’s.

OUTSIDER’S NEW YELLOWSTONE RECAP

For all of the Yellowstone fans out there, our colleagues over at Outsider have a new recap of Sunday night’s new episode. I won’t play spoiler here for those who haven’t yet seen “Watch ‘Em Ride Away,” the fifth episode of the new fifth season.
