KSR's 2015 Signing Day Diary, Part II

by: Mrs. Tyler Thompson02/04/15@MrsTylerKSR
IMG_3862 The board is filling up and things are rolling right along at the Nutter Training Center. So far this morning, we've had two YAHTZEES from Will Jackson and Therrell Gosier. As we move through the morning, who will join them? Turn on KSR and let's find out. Nick (10:28):  If you thought Javon Provitt had swag, Logan Stenberg started with swag. logan stenberg Keeping the #PlaidGameProper, but I doubt those shorts still fit the 330-pounder. Tyler (10:21): It looks like we need some cheering up. Thankfully, DJ Eliot and Freddie Maggard shared this awkwardly wonderful moment a little earlier: eliotmaggard Tyler (10:12): Not getting Lewis sucks, not gonna lie. Now might a good time to share this: [caption id="attachment_172824" align="alignnone" width="599"]B87IyX6CEAEx_Ir @crimsonquarry[/caption] Let's stay classy, BBN. Nick (10:11):  Marcus Lewis has committed to Florida State.  The 4-star teammate of Jabari Greenwood was recruited by the Cats longer than most, but it still wasn't enough to take one of the best secondary athletes in the country.  Miami seemed to be the other favorite, but Florida State swooped in near the end. Nick (10:08): Let’s take a minute to troll the Dirty Birds. In case you hadn’t heard, Bobby Petrino is such a sleaze ball that one school in South Carolina will no longer allow him to recruit their players. They pull a long-time commit’s scholarship JUST before NSD, only to take in a guy who was kicked off TCU’s team for allegedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend’s head. Then again, what more can you expect? https://twitter.com/Mark_Schlabach/status/562974319912169472 Tyler (9:59): AVERY WILLIAMSON IN THE HOUSE! With a little fro! IMG_3872 Avery is posing with Stoops and early enrollee Kengera Daniel, who met with the media and said he expects to play the "jack" position at Kentucky (for you football newbs, that's a hybrid defensive end/linebacker position). Kengera's parents both graduated from Florida State, and he said that having two former Noles coaches on the staff was a big factor in his decision. Also, during Kentucky's losing streak, he never had second thoughts. "I didn't look anywhere else." Nick (9:56):  Javon Provitt's homecoming picture is spectacular. provitt homecoming The ultimate question, does he wear the glasses under his helmet? Nick (9:49): Kayuane Ross, a JUCO transfer at wide receiver, makes it Twitter official.  He will have one more year in JUCO, coming to Kentucky in 2016. https://twitter.com/bigross3/status/562983860724826112 4_3376294 KAYUANE ROSS Wide Receiver Phoenix College (JUCO) 247 Composite Ranking: .84 Chose UK Over: Oklahoma, Akron, Bowling Green Highlights Nick’s Breakdown:  Ross is a Junior College transfer originally from Lakota West, graduating high school alongside Mikel Horton.  The big target fits exactly into what Coach Mainord has been recruiting: SIZE.  This class is all about length, and Ross uses his ball skills well while it's in the air.  His JUCO had a terrible record and was heavily outscored, but he still managed 5 touchdown grabs in less than 10 games. Tyler (9:40): Some sad news: as we reported yesterday, running back Josh Clemons will transfer. josh-clemons A UK spokesman just confirmed the news to Jon Hale. Best of luck to Josh, who has gone through some majorly hard times during his career at UK, including two major injuries and the passing of his mother. He's on track to graduate in the spring and could be available to play immediately at another school as a graduate transfer. Here's hoping he makes the best of whatever opportunity comes his way. Great kid. Tyler (9:32): Phew, things are slowing down a little bit. Marcus Lewis' announcement is coming up at 9:45 a.m. and word on Twitter is he's going to Florida State; however, there is still a spot on the board for him, so cross your fingers. IMG_3868 While we wait, let's laugh at UCLA signee Soso Jamabo's candid honesty about why he chose UCLA: https://twitter.com/Soso_Jamabo1/status/562979638914613248 Nick (9:30):  Add Marcus Walker and Javon Provitt to the list. 4_2924179 JAVON PROVITT Defensive Tackle 6’3″, 305 lbs. Warren, OH 247 Composite Ranking: .8398 Chose UK Over: Pitt, Maryland, Purdue, Cincinnati, Akron, Ohio Highlights Nick’s Breakdown:  Provitt will provide a necessity in this class - size in the trenches.  Provitt is a man that made his living bruising against tough competition in Northern Ohio.  He never got a day off, spending everyday in practice working against James Daniels, an offensive lineman headed to Iowa next year. 4_1075475 MARCUS WALKER Safety 6’1″, 176 lbs. Lake Wales, FL (Lake Wales) 247 Composite Ranking: .8764 Chose UK Over: Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Illinois, Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, Vanderbilt, UVA Highlights Interesting Fact:  Marcus actually committed and decommitted from Kentucky in a matter of months.  He received over 20 scholarship offers from around the country, therefore he reopened his recruiting.  After Kentucky’s staff remained in contact Marcus, he recommitted to UK in July. Kory’s Breakdown:  Walker has good size for a defensive back.  He isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder and put a hit on an opposing player.  He also has a 6th sense for finding the ball when it’s up in the air.  The way he breaks on a QB’s throw, it kind of reminds me of AJ Stamps. Not only did he play free safety, but he also played WR for Lake Wales.  It always helps having a defensive back with good hands.  According to 247Sports, Walker is the 25th best safety in the 2015 class.  We have Chad Scott to thank for bringing this recruit to UK. CLove eating gurl Tyler (9:20): Nebraska transfer Courtney Love spoke with the media a few minutes ago. Here are the highlights:
  • Love expects to play middle linebacker and says he has a "good feeling" about his hardship waiver going through
  • Love is from Youngstown, Ohio, and thinks of Vince Marrow as a "second father figure"
  • What sticks out to Love about Kentucky so far? "The food."
  • He actually considered staying in high school an extra semester so he could be a part of Stoops' first class at UK, but he was already enrolled at Nebraska.
  • On his famous name: "I go to an airport and give them my ID and they're like, 'No.' Courtney Love that killed Kurt Cobain?"
Welcome aboard, Courtney. We'll try to keep the Hole jokes to a minimum. ...I said "try." Nick (9:15):  The King was entered the building.  4_1218045 SIHIEM KING Running back (athlete) 5’9″, 172 lbs. Moultrie, GA 247 Composite Ranking: .8451 Chose UK Over: West Virginia, Wake Forrest, Washington State, Cincinnati Highlights Nick’s Breakdown:  Shannon Dawson's first surprise of the recruiting season, Sihiem King has the kind of speed to get excited about - 4.38 40-yard dash.  His detractors dislike his size, but you cannot ignore the numbers: 40 touchdowns and 2,000+ yards.  USA Today named him a Second Team All-American.  King's small stature has him in a predicament, but his skills are best used in the Air Raid, a la Noel Devine.  Who knows if we'll see him make big plays from the get go, but the last time the Cats got a smaller athlete/running back from Georgia, Commonwealth Stadium was filled with BOOMs. Interesting Fact:  King's coach might be familiar to many of you.  Remember the MTV show "Two-a-Days" about the Hoover High Football team?  Well, after coach Rush Probst was fired at Hoover, Al. he went to Georgia to coach Colquitt County High School, where he turned King into a superstar.  When Colquitt faced Probtst's former team, King dropped a cool 172 yards and 3 touchdowns in an upset victory. Tyler (9:07): I'm interrupting football coverage for this disgusting pic of Kentucky Joe grinding on Dancing Guy during Mony Mony: [caption id="attachment_172815" align="alignnone" width="394"]B9AWFIbIMAEvANh @GreatBlakes[/caption] CAN'T UNSEE Nick (9:05):  Eli Brown, the state's premiere defensive superstar, has put pen to paper. [caption id="attachment_172814" align="alignnone" width="600"](@WEHSSports) (@WEHSSports)[/caption] ELI BROWN Outside linebacker 6’2″, 190 lbs. Bowling Green, KY 247 Composite Ranking: .9006 Chose UK Over: Florida, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Ohio State, Penn State, WKU Highlights Nick’s Breakdown:  Behind Damien Harris, there wasn't a move coveted player in the state of Kentucky than Warren East's Eli Brown.  An amazing athlete on the outside, his ability to lay hits in open space earned him attention early from James Franklin at Vanderbilt.  Once Franklin departed, the Cats had to fend off Ohio State and Florida - Eli's favorite team growing up.  Since Stoops and Eliot convinced him to stay home, Brown has worked with the coaches as much as possible.  Even when he was rehabbing an offseason leg injury, Brown was working on technique with Eliot during summer camps.  With some added size, the thin linebacker position could give Brown an opportunity to see the field next season.
