Kentucky didn’t get their prettiest win ever when they took down Morehead State on Monday, but they say a win is a win for a reason, right? Even after a slow start on both ends of the floor, the Cats adjusted and got the job done.

KSR has all of the top takeaways from the 75-59 victory that took place in Historic Memorial Coliseum.

Jordan Obi is one tough, talented player

It’s easy to sit back and think, “Man, imagine if last year’s team had Jordan Obi” after her debut performance as a Wildcat. It was unclear how her game would translate at this level — and we still haven’t totally seen that, to be fair — but it’s hard to ask for a much better start for her.

In 31 minutes of play, Obi put up 15 points and 15 rebounds, with seven of those boards coming on the offensive end.

Hopefully we’ll see this all season, but it’s clear that Obi is a workhorse. After getting barked at by Kenny Brooks early on for not attacking the glass, she was a bruiser down low. She wasn’t afraid to stick it to someone if it meant grabbing the rebound. That level of physicality should serve her well all year long.

One bad game shooting the ball or will this be a trend?

Have you all ever heard of the sandwich method for criticism? You say something nice, say something not as nice, then end it with something nice again? Well, here’s the not as nice part.

If there is one thing to be concerned about with this team, it may be if they’ll be able to consistently hit the three-pointer this season. Surely, they’ll catch fire a time or two and beat a team by 30, but how often will Kentucky shoot 4-24 (17%) from deep? Hopefully, this is about it.

The starting five doesn’t exactly scream deadeye at all — at least yet — and Asia Boone, Lexi Blue, Kaelyn Carroll and Josie Gilvin went a combined 2-14 (14%) from beyond the arc. Not ideal, but maybe it was a one-game issue. We’ll have to see.

Back to the nice part of the takeaways.

Clara Strack hasn’t regressed at all it seems

Kentucky got a big performance out of Obi, but just looking at the stat sheet, Clara Strack was the best player on the floor against Morehead State.

Not only did Strack match Obi’s 15 points and 15 rebounds, but the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year also rejected three shots and got three steals as well. On top of that, she only recorded three fouls after being in foul trouble in what felt like nearly every game last season.

It’s hard to ask her to be a whole lot better after putting up the numbers she did last year, but it’s certainly possible. At the very least, she can put up similar numbers and earn her way to some more All-SEC honors.
