This season has been very up and down for the Kentucky women’s basketball team, and many folks have questioned if Kyra Elzy will be the leader of the program heading into the 2024-25 season.

After winning the SEC Tournament back in 2022, Elzy received a contract extension that would keep her on UK’s payroll through the 2026-27 season. However, after losing to Ole Miss on Thursday, the Kentucky women’s basketball program fell to 11-18 (4-11 SEC). UK finished 12-19 last season in year three under Elzy.

We have been witnessing some historically bad stuff this season, to say the least.

Of course, after such a drastic downfall, the BBN and folks around the program have pondered, “Will Kyra Elzy be back next season?” After the 30-point loss to the Rebels on Thursday, Elzy commented on the issue.

I believe I am going to be back here,” Elzy said. “No one has told me any different. So, until then, my job is to coach this team and get us ready. Heading into the postseason, that is where my mind is. I’m sure I will meet with administration after the season, but as for right now, I am the head coach here and I’m going to put my head down and grind and continue to work.”

Of course, it’s hard to expect Elzy to say anything else, right? It’s not like she would come out and say, “No, I think I’ll be fired.” However, it is interesting to hear what Elzy had to say regarding her future as head coach.

If Kentucky were to relieve Elzy of her duties any time soon, she would be owed over $2.5 million through 2027. Here are the details for the three remaining years of her contract:

  • 2024-25: $800,000 ($400,000 in endorsements)
  • 2025-26: $825,000 ($425,000 in endorsements)
  • 2026-27: $850,000 ($450,000 in endorsements)

With LSU looming and the SEC Tournament on the horizon, now may not have been the best time for this discussion to have been brought up. Regardless, it sounds like Elzy is confident that she’ll be back in Lexington for a fifth year as head coach.
