UK golfer Laney Frye qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur after shooting 72 and finishing third at a qualifier in St. Clair, Michigan yesterday afternoon.

The resilience that led Frye to one of the best freshman seasons in UK program history was on full display Friday, and it was enough to secure her a one-way ticket to New York for the U.S. Women’s Amateur next month.

After bogeying the first hole and double bogeying the third, Frye quickly found herself +3. But the rising sophomore settled in and birdied holes 4, 6, and 12. The highlight of the day came on hole 13, when she rolled in a put for eagle and moved to -1 on the day. A late bogey on 17 knocked her back to even par, which was where she would finish the round.

It’s the latest accomplishment for the Frye, who led the Wildcats all season long. In her first collegiate season, she averaged 73.5 strokes per round, a mark that’s fifth best in team history, and also became the program’s fourth freshman ever named to the SEC All-Freshman team.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is set for August 2-8, and qualifying tournaments will continue to take place over the next couple weeks all across the country. Several more Wildcats will look to join Frye in New York next month as they compete in the upcoming qualifiers.

Best of luck to all our UK golfers out there!
