LCA Puts a Running Clock on Danville; Locks up No. 1 Seed

The No. 19 Lexington Christian Academy Eagles (5-3) defeated the Danville Admirals (7-2) 49-18 on a beautiful fall night in Lexington. With the victory, the Eagles clinched the number one seed in the district in Coach Oakley Watkins’ first season as head coach.
Nash Whelan, LCA’s sophomore dual-threat quarterback, terrorized the Admirals as a triple-threat. He passed for 235 yards and four touchdowns, rushed for 149 yards and a score, and came up with a defensive interception. Senior Tyler King had eight catches for an eye-popping 185 yards, three touchdowns, and added a defensive interception.
Jayvian Meaux, Danville’s outstanding freshman running back, rushed for three scores to bring his state-leading total to 25.
In a foreshadowing of what was to come, the Admirals rolled the dice on their opening drive, but were stonewalled on a 4th-and-1 rush from their own 39-yard line.
LCA made them pay.
Whelan nearly went to the house on a first play 35-yard keeper. He connected with King for a touchdown on 3rd-and-goal from 11 yards out a few plays later.
On the Ads’ second drive, Meaux completed a 51-yard halfback pass to Trinden Sellers to the Eagle five-yard line, but the LCA defense stopped Danville by one yard on four downs again. On fourth down, Jeremiah Burbage forced the receiver out of bounds on the one-yard line.
Whelen connected with King again on a 65-yard bomb. Bennett Gudalis punched it a few plays later to make it 14-0 Eagles
Midway through the second quarter, Danville’s David Shelton forced an Eagle fumble on the LCA 1-yard line that was recovered by linebacker Braiden Ford. Meaux rushed for a touchdown on the next play to bring Danville within 14-6. The extra point was no good.

After recovering a Danville onside kick, LCA produced a 55-yard scoring drive. Gudalis capped it off with a five-yard touchdown run, his second of the night.
Whelan picked off Danville on the next drive and then rushed for a 25-yard touchdown a few plays later to extend the LCA lead to 28-6. King added a defensive interception before halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Whelan found Conrad Hart wide open in the end zone on a 33-yard flea flicker, and the route was on.
Meaux added his second touchdown run to cut the lead to 34-12, but the Whelan-to-King connection struck for two more touchdowns to create a running clock.
Meaux tallied a 34-yard touchdown run late for the Admirals.
Despite the loss, Danville is certainly trending in the right direction in Coach Steve Stonebraker’s first season at the school. The Admirals went 0-10 in both 2023 and 2024 and scored only 33 points in 2024. They will finish second in the district in 2025.

RPI Struggles
The RPI, a computer formula that determines seeding for third and fourth round playoff matchups, shockingly had Danville No. 2 in 2A and LCA way down at No. 5 coming into the game. Something needs to be done to tweak the RPI, as human polls clearly had LCA well above Danville. KSR had LCA No. 1 in 2A, with Danville not even in the top five. The Massey computer rankings predicted a 42-6 LCA victory.
