Lexington Native Tyson Gay Running in Rio this Week

[caption id="attachment_204632" align="aligncenter" width="388"] Credit to Getty Images[/caption] Lexington native and Lafayette High School alum, Tyson Gay, gets another chance at earning a medal for the United States later this week in Rio. Gay earned a silver medal in the 4 x 100m relay in the 2012 London Games, before it was stripped of him for failing a drug test, testing positive for a banned substance.  Gay also holds the second fastest time ever in the Men's 100m dash behind Usain Bolt, who, after watching race earlier tonight, I'm convinced is a robot sent to convince humans that we actually aren't athletic at all. Now that Gay's suspension is over, he was chosen as one of the members of Team USA's 4 x 100m relay in this year's olympics, which definitely sparked some controversy in the olympic world, especially with U.S. athletes from other sports speaking out against Russian athletes who have failed drug tests recently. However, Gay doesn't care about what others are saying about him. His only goal is to gain back a medal that he lost three and half years ago, he said in an interview with NBC in July.

This could restore things for me in my heart," Gay said on the eve of the preliminaries of 100 meters at the Olympic trials. "I lost something when I gave that medal back. The people closest to me, they know how bad I want that medal. Anyone on the outside? I don't really care.

Gay will compete on Thursday, August 18 to try to bring another medal back to the United States and fill the void that was left after the 2012 games. Personally, I have no issues with Gay competing for the U.S. as he has been clean for at least 3 years now. He served his suspension and still has the talent to be a member of the team, so more power to him. Good luck to him and the rest of the American athletes still to compete in Rio.
