Among Liam Coen Fervor, Rams Thursday Night Football Means More

“On the ninth day of Kentucky’s offensive coordinator coaching search, the sports world gave to me, Liam Coen on Thursday Night Football.”
It doesn’t roll off the tongue is eloquently as the 12 days of Christmas, but it’s what the BBN must settle for on this soggy December day.
Since Kentucky parted ways with Rich Scangarello last Tuesday, we’ve heard very little about the Wildcats’ coaching search. Even after Mark Stoops held a press conference, details on when and who will call Kentucky’s offense in 2023 are few and far between.
Liam Coen was the first name entered into the fray and it’s taken up all of the oxygen in the search. With the Rams’ season falling apart because of injuries and other assistants returning to the college ranks, the stars have aligned to make it possible. Matt Jones reported late Sunday night that UK might have a coordinator Monday or Tuesday. He was not the only one who heard something similar. However, I’ve remained skeptical because of one big catch.
Timing Out a Potential Liam Coen Kentucky Reunion
Liam Coen is the L.A. Rams offensive coordinator. It’s different than being an NFL position coach. Coordinators rarely, if ever, pack up their bags and leave midseason without burning any bridges. Coen is only 37 years old. Burning NFL bridges would not be a wise career decision.
If Sean McVay and the Rams organization were willing to let Coen walk, it had to be at the right time. The Rams play the Raiders on Thursday Night Football. They will not play again until the following Monday Night Football. If a Kentucky homecoming is going to happen, it’s in-between this 11-day window.

While Coen’s name was thrown around at Kentucky, it was also mentioned for the Louisville head coaching and the South Carolina offensive coordinator position. Following the hires of Jeff Brohm and Dowell Loggains (which is still not yet official), those are off the table.
Of course, things may go awry. The two sides may not reach an agreement. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
For at least one more day, I will not worry about a Liam Coen, Kentucky football reunion. Tonight, it’s all about the Rams and the Raiders. The only fireworks I’m anticipating will happen when Baker Mayfield gets thrown into the Thursday Night Football game after only one day in L.A.
