LiAngelo Ball, UCLA teammates suspended indefinitely for shoplifting in China
UCLA freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley are home safely from China following their arrest for shoplifting, but what punishment awaited them in Los Angeles? During a press conference this afternoon, head coach Steve Alford announced the trio is suspended indefinitely for stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to the team’s hotel in Hangzhou, China, where the Bruins were staying prior to their exhibition vs. Georgia Tech.
The freshmen apologized for the incident and thanked President Trump for intervening with Chinese president Xi Jinping on their behalf. UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero also gave out some more details about the incident, telling reporters that the three players stole items from three stores, were arrested, and posted bail of $2,200, which has since been refunded. At the time of the arrest, they were forced to surrender their passports and weren’t allowed to leave the country; however, Chinese authorities did not forbid them from leaving their hotel. The school asked them to stay there for their own safety.
Alford said the players will not travel with the team or practice while the school reviews the situation. Odds they’ll be back before the Kentucky game on December 23? (High.)
