During Gov. Andy Beshear’s daily Coronavirus briefing, he warned Kentuckians of potential COVID-19 testing scams, referencing “pop-up testing” in the city of Louisville.

WAVE 3 News in Louisville also reported the pop-up sites, which are conducting mouth swabs and telling patients their results can be read in 24 hours. However, mouth swabs cannot test for the coronavirus. The Louisville Metro government told WAVE 3 News it was not consulted prior to these sites being set up, and the office has received multiple calls about the illegitimate testing sites.

Other media outlets in Louisville are also reporting the pop-up tests, including the Courier Journal and WLKY. Here’s a piece from WLKY’s story:

The group, called Community Outreach Marketing Group, LLC, set up their mobile testing site outside Wayside Christian Mission Tuesday.

Monquiz Wedlow, who identified himself as the vice president and a consultant, said the organization was assessing patients for COVID-19 in an underserved part of the community.

On Wednesday, the group set up tents in the parking lot of a gas station in the Russell neighborhood. The workers, who told WLKY they were nurses, were not wearing any identification and the group’s sign advertising the testing did not state an affiliate with a hospital or health department.

Deputy Secretary of Education and Workforce Development Josh Benton added that people are also attempting to scam those who are eligible for unemployment insurance. Kentucky will not ask for money in order to receive these benefits.

Be careful out there. If you are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, get help from hospitals, healthcare providers or government resources.

*Update*

A previous version of this article included Hazard as a town with fake testing. That was incorrect. Fake tests have only been reported in Louisville at this time.
