A pair of Louisville-based private schools took down public schools to win the KHSAA state championships in baseball and softball over the weekend.

On Saturday in Lexington, the Trinity Shamrocks won an extra-inning thriller, 2-1, against another Louisville high school, Pleasure Ridge Park, to win the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament. Meanwhile, the Assumption Rockets took down defending champion Henderson County 4-2 to take home the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Softball State Tournament title.

For Trinity, it was the school’s second-ever state baseball title victory and the first since 2021. For Assumption, Saturday’s win marked the school’s first-ever softball championship.

The Trinity vs. PRP matchup was especially entertaining. It was the first time in KHSAA history that two Louisville schools met in the title game. The Shamrocks (38-3) were ranked No. 1 in the state for most of the year, but needed nine innings (just the sixth championship since 1940 to reach extras) to stave off the Panthers at Kentucky Proud Park on UK’s campus.

Neither team scored through the first seven innings before PRP senior Grayson Roll was able to tack on the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. But Trinity junior Nolan Hosking responded in the bottom of the inning with his eighth home run of the season to knot the score going into the final inning. With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, senior Caleb Ricks (a Notre Dame signee) nailed a RBI single up the middle to bring in the winning run.

Not far away at John Cropp Stadium, Assumption (35-6) was able to avenge last season’s state semifinal defeat with the win over Henderson County. Western Kentucky signee Lauren Satterly was named MVP for her efforts on the mound and at the plate. She pitched the entire game while driving in the go-ahead run in the top of the third inning. Assumption sophomore Grace Sander was able to bring in two more runners to make it a 4-1 game in the top of the seventh.

Henderson County managed to tack on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 4-2, and even had the tying run in scoring position. But Satterly was able to escape the jam as Assumption was crowned the state champions. It was just the fourth-ever state tournament appearance for the Rockets, but the second in a row.
