What Travis Perry's commitment means for Kentucky

Travis Perry, a four-star point guard out of Eddyville (KY) Lyon County, will play his college basketball for the home-state Wildcats.

On Sunday afternoon at his high school, Perry announced live on the 247Sports YouTube channel that he has committed to Kentucky. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound floor general was down to a list of finalists that also included Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Western Kentucky, and Alabama, but he ultimately elected to land with head coach John Calipari and the Wildcats.

“At the end of the day I decided to stay home and play for my home state school,” Perry told On3’s Joe Tipton. “Growing up I played for the West KY Wildcats and now I’m excited to join the Kentucky Wildcats.”

Perry is considered the No. 87 overall class of 2024 recruit and the 11th-best point guard by the On3 Industry Ranking. Kentucky offered him a scholarship in June 2022 and most recently brought him to Lexington in October for Big Blue Madness. Cincinnati and Ole Miss were thought to be the two leaders heading into decision day, but Perry did an excellent job of keeping his recruitment tight to the vest.

Calipari already had two 2024 commits signed with four-star point guard Boogie Fland and four-star center Somto Cyril. Having Perry on board as the third will help with the Wildcats’ backcourt depth moving forward. As of the time that Perry made his announcement, he had not yet signed his National Letter of Intent. The early Signing Period ends on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at midnight.

Perry broke the state of Kentucky’s all-time scoring record on March 16 during the 2023 UK Healthcare Boy’s Sweet 16 Tournament inside Rupp Arena, surpassing Wayland’s Kelly “King” Coleman’s (1953-56) previous mark of 4,337 career points. Perry broke the record on a free throw in the third quarter. He was named the 2022-23 Gatorade Kentucky Boys Basketball Player of the Year prior to leading Lyon County to the Elite 8 after putting up per-game averages of 32.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 4.7 steals in the regular season.

Going into Perry’s senior season, Lyon County will be among the favorites to make it back to Rupp Arena in the spring. The Lyons will open the 2023-24 regular season on the road against Livingston Central on Dec. 5 as Perry will look to grow his all-time scoring record even more. Only this year, he’ll do so as a Wildcat.
