In 2022-23, Maddie Scherr led the Kentucky women’s basketball team in total rebounds, assists, and blocks per game. Last season was truly a breakout year for her. In her first two seasons of college basketball playing for Oregon, Scherr averaged just 3.7 points per game, and despite seeing a good amount of minutes, her production just wasn’t there.

However, Scherr’s first season in Lexington was a much-needed fresh start. The Florence, KY native and former Miss Kentucky Basketball winner averaged 11.6 points per game for the Wildcats, third-best on the team. She also spent the most time on the floor for Kyra Elzy’s squad, as she saw just under 32 minutes per game. So, the question begs, what should the BBN expect from Scherr in her senior season at UK?

Taking on a Leadership Role

With Jada Walker transferring to Baylor and Robyn Benton graduating, Maddie Scherr is the next woman up to lead the Lady ‘Cats. The real first sign of Scherr’s leadership ability came against Florida in the 2022 SEC Tournament. If you remember, Scherr went down early with a head injury, but she managed to get back into the game, helping Kentucky to a 72-57 win. She finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and six assists in 26 minutes played.

Nobody would have blamed her for sitting out the rest of the game. After all, it was a pretty nasty bump. Despite that, Scherr made her way back into the contest, and the ‘Cats got a big, big win. She then totaled 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and six blocks in the following win over Alabama the very next day. Don’t forget her career-best 27-point outing in the regular season finale against Tennessee, either.

From this, it was clear that Scherr is a gritty, resilient player who will do whatever it takes to win, and that’s exactly what Kentucky will need to be like in order to see success this season.

On-Court Production

As mentioned earlier, Scherr averaged double-digit points and led Kentucky in a few statistical categories as a junior. Now, as the returner with the most experience and best resume on the team, how is Scherr going to continue to climb the ladder this season?

Well, the answer is quite simple. She just has to maintain her hard work ethic and her toughness. As Kyra Elzy said following Sherr’s performance against Florida, “Her mental toughness is huge, and we needed [that] for us to continue to be successful.” That’s going to be the mantra this season. Scherr is going to continue to get better and better at her craft, but she’ll have to maintain her hard-working mentality in order to do so.

It’ll be interesting to see what Scherr can bring to the table both on and off the court for the Kentucky women’s basketball team this season.
