One of Kentucky’s premier players from last season is reportedly taking a visit to one of the premier programs in women’s college basketball.

On Saturday “Skim Milkey”, the women’s basketball version of the popular X/Twitter burner account Trilly Donovan, reported that Maddie Scherr will be taking a visit to Iowa on Thursday. Scherr spent the last two seasons in Lexington under former head coach Kyra Elzy but elected to open up her options prior to the Wildcats’ hiring of Kenny Brooks earlier in the offseason.

It’s kind of odd that we live in a world where a social media page called “Skim Milkey” is dropping significant UK news, but here we are.

Similarly to Ajae Petty, it was inevitable that the phone would start ringing whenever Scherr entered her name into the transfer portal, which she did on March 18. Scherr’s 12.5 points per game were second on the team in 2023-24 while her 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game led the ‘Cats.

In 2022-23, however, Scherr had what was arguably an even better season. In her junior year at Kentucky, Scherr posted 5.1 RPG, 4.3 APG, 2.1 SPG, and 1.1 BPG. All of those were better figures than what she put up last season. She also scored 11.6 points per outing and shot 38.5% from the field in her junior season, which is considerably higher than her 33.5% clip from this past season.

Of course, making a return to Lexington is still on the table for Scherr. When you consider the lack of depth that Kentucky currently has on the wings, it would be massive if the fifth-year senior decided to call it a career in blue and white.

But Iowa is coming off back-to-back national championship game appearances and is losing National Player of the Year Caitlin Clark to the WNBA. Scherr would be a significant piece for a Hawkeyes team looking to stay competitive in the post-Clark era.

If there’s going to be a new 22 in Iowa City, then Scherr may want to prepare herself for an unbelievable amount of pressure to be placed on her shoulders. Or she could just come back to Lexington and wear “KENTUCKY” across her chest for one last ride. We’ll see how things shake up here soon enough.

Below is Kentucky’s current 2024-25 roster outlook.
