Smith played in all 13 games last season for Troy, was the starter in the final seven games, and went 5-2 in that span. He completed 144 of 229 passes for 1,669 yards and 14 touchdowns, and added another 191 yards and a touchdown on the ground. At SEC Media Days on Thursday, Mark Stoops was asked about his new QB, who is expected to be a very competitive second-stringer behind Terry Wilson. Stoops said, "It is important to get Sawyer. The fact that he has experience -- he's a really talented player, but he's also played in big games. I'm a big believer at that position, you don't know exactly what you have until you get into a game. And so with us having some transfers -- we had some departures -- it was important to bring some experience in there. "Sawyer is going to be a big piece. How big? I don't know. We'll see when he gets on campus and we get to work with him. But I'm excited to have him, I'm excited to have his experience. He's been under pressure, he's been in big games, you've seen him deliver under pressure, and that's really important to have at that position." Smith will graduate from Troy later this month and will have two seasons of immediate eligibility at Kentucky.
