Nerlens may have bigger problems than Alex Len

by:Andrew McCarthy06/22/13
Alex-Len-Nerlens-Noel     Not physically, obviously. Len is enormous. But according Matt Norlander, 'sources' say that Nerlens Noel is 'out' as the number one overall pick in next week's draft. Norlander claims that even if the Cavs cool on current flavor-of-the-week Alex Len, they'll go with Anthony Bennett, Otto Porter, or Ben McLemore with the top pick.   This draft just gets weirder and weirder. While it made sense on some level that the Cavs would be enamored with the potential of a 7'1, 260 pound athletic big, the rumor mill seems to indicate Len's rising stock has more to do with some misgivings regarding our boy Nerlens. And the fact that Len has been unable to participate in pre-draft workouts himself (due to a stress fracture in his ankle) lends credibility to this argument. The jump can hardly be attributed to anything that the Maryland center has done.   When the presumed number 1 pick for the previous 6-8 months is suddenly surpassed on big boards a week before the draft, that's usually not a good sign. When the player doing the jumping is an injured, enigmatic, and unproven big, it's a bad sign. When that injured, enigmatic and unproven big is just one of four players all-but-guaranteed to do the jumping, it's a really, really bad sign.   So, unfortunately, it seems as if the Cavs are starting to buy into the (fabricated) negative hype that has gathered around Nerlens as of late. That, or their doctors have given them word that his rehab is not as far along as previously indicated. Either way though, if we believe the rumors, Nerlens Noel is no longer Cleveland-bound. And given the type of human and player (when healthy) that we know Nerlens to be, that's tough to hear.   That being said, him falling to John Wall and the Wizards at No. 3 wouldn't be too bad either. Keep that in mind, basketball gods.     [ CBS SPORTS: Suddenly, Maryland's Alex Len is the big rumor to be No. 1 pick ]
