We are only 180 minutes from the first post at Keeneland on Opening Day of the 2023 Spring Meet. Later this afternoon–or maybe already–thousands of horse racing enthusiasts and college students will flock to one of the premier racing venues in the United States to witness the first of fifteen days of live racing this spring.

Aside from the exciting races, Keeneland-goers can experience the tailgating outside, the elegance inside, the picturesque landscapes and gardens, the fashion, and my favorite–the burgoo. (And a Keeneland Breeze to wash it down.)

This year, there are new additions to the Keeneland experience both on-site and to anyone, including new digital programs, a new special exhibition at Keeneland Library, and new commemorative bottles of Kentucky’s sweet nectar:

Free digital programs

Earlier this week, Keeneland announced it will now offer complimentary digital race day programs to race-goers and anyone following from home. The move is a part of Keeneland’s ongoing efforts to enhance the overall experience at one of the most magical places on earth.

The digital program is a comprehensive guide that provides valuable information about the horses, jockeys, trainers, and other important details relevant to each race. It is designed to help both novice and experienced bettors make more informed decisions when placing their bets.

“We as an industry have a collective responsibility to create lifelong fans of the sport,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “Equipping the public with the tools and information to be successful participants is key to creating active interest in Keeneland racing.”

Overall, Keeneland’s decision to offer complimentary digital race books is a welcome change that horse racing enthusiasts worldwide will undoubtedly appreciate. No more driving around Lexington looking for a hard copy!

An exhibit honoring racing’s Black pioneers

On February 23, Keeneland Library unveiled “The Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers,” a new free exhibit highlighting the lives and careers of 80 African Americans who played a role in the equine industry dating back to the mid-1800s. This special exhibit is open through August 31, 2023, at Keeneland Library.

New commemorative Maker’s Mark bottles

With the new spring meeting came three new Maker’s Mark Bourbon Keeneland commemorative bottles. From artists Sandra Oppegard, Andre Pater and Tyler Robertson, the label art depicts the winning jockeys from the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

But like the Drake album, if you’re reading this, it’s too late. The new limited-edition bottles hit store shelves early this morning with fewer than 10,000 in total for sale.

But you can still get your tickets to Keeneland here for the spring meet.
