Nick Mingione’s bullpen has landed another promising young arm. North Florida right-handed pitcher Bryson Treichel committed to Kentucky last night, becoming the Bat Cats’ latest addition from the transfer portal.

Treichel is a native of DeLand, Florida, and earned Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman Team honors in his one season with the Ospreys. He struck out 74 batters over 61.2 innings, finishing the year with a 4-5 record and 5.25 ERA over 14 starts. Treichel made some noise in his college debut, striking out five batters and throwing three shutout innings in North Florida’s win over Notre Dame. He had ten games with five or more strikeouts; he struck out ten batters over six innings in a loss to Jacksonville in March.

Last night, Treichel told Derek Terry of Bat Cats Central that his relationship with the Kentucky coaching staff is the primary reason he’s bringing his talents to Lexington.

“I felt something different with all the (Kentucky) coaches. The coaching staff was great. I had a vibe from them that I didn’t get from anyone else.”

Treichel was the second commitment of the weekend for Mingione. On Friday night, Western Kentucky right-handed pitcher Jack Bennett committed to the program. The Paducah native was a weekend starter and an All-Conference USA Second Team selection this past season, finishing with a 3.13 ERA in 63.1 innings pitched and holding opponents to a .252 batting average with 49 strikeouts and just 20 walks.

Treichel and Bennett are two of four RHPs Kentucky has added from the portal this offseason. Kaden Echeman of Northern Kentucky and Burkley Bounds of Eastern Kentucky committed to Kentucky on May 25. Clearly, rebuilding the bullpen is one of Mingione’s priorities this offseason. On Friday, the program got more good news when Tyler Bell, Ben Cleaver, Ryan Schwartz, Nate Harris, and Luke Lawrence all confirmed they are returning to Kentucky next season.

Welcome to the family, Bryson!
