Want to know which Kentucky basketball teams have started worse than 5-10 to open a season?

  1. 1926-27 (3-12)

That’s it. That’s the list.

If you’ll recall, that Basil Hayden-led bunch in 1926-27 was also the last team to start a season 1-6 like the 2020-21 Kentucky team did. That historically bad UK team would finish the year 3-13 overall and just 1-6 in conference play.

Looking through the all-time records among major Kentucky coaches, Adolph Rupp and Joe B. Hall both had teams finish 13-13 overall, while Eddie Sutton’s 13-19 season in 1988-89 ranks among the worst in program history. Rick Pitino started his Kentucky career with a 14-14 record in 1989-90, while Tubby Smith had a 22-13 season (2005-06) and Billy Gillispie had back-to-back 13-plus loss seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

John Calipari had a 12-loss season in 2012-13 that led to an NIT birth, along with an 11-loss season in 2017-18.

Sitting at 5-10 on the year with at least ten more regular season games to go and the SEC Tournament to follow, where will the 2020-21 season rank among all-time Kentucky teams?
