PJ Washington's pink shoes are a tribute to grandmother battling cancer
Last week, PJ Washington’s pink shoes turned heads during Kentucky’s win over Monmouth. We’ve since learned that the shoes, Nike Zoom Rev II TB Promo Kay Yows, are PJ’s way of honoring his grandmother, Susie Tucker, who is battling breast cancer.
I spoke with PJ’s mother, Sherry, who said this isn’t her mother’s first run with cancer. In 2013, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and overcame it a year later, just two months before Sherry’s father passed away. A few months ago, Susie, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, had a mastectomy and is now finishing up chemotherapy.

“She watches PJ’s games faithfully,” Sherry said. “She’s never been to a game at Rupp, so we’re hoping she feels better soon so we can bring her to one.”
Our hearts go out to Susie, Sherry, and their families. They should be proud of PJ for such a heartfelt tribute.
