For me, the most powerful sports moment of my lifetime is the
Kentucky-Duke game in 1992. Having grown up watching Richie Farmer play, first on the city courts in Middlesboro on the weekends and then for Clay County High School, the 1992 team was one that I cherished. As it came right at the age when one's obsession for Kentucky basketball may be at its highest (middle school), the 1992 team may have been the team I followed the strongest. I was in Birmingham the day for the SEC Tournament and stayed long after the final horn blew to celebrate the Conference title. Thus when Woods' shot hit, I danced....and when Laettner's shot hit, I cried.
SI.com has all of its articles from the past now on their site and they are searchable for all to read. I went back to read an article that I remembered from 1992....Alexander Wolff's piece on the game in the Year in Review issue. Go ahead and take a few minutes to read it (linked below)....you will remember all the moments of that game, good and bad, and realize what a special event it was.....and try not to love the last line of the piece....I dare ya.
