Recap: WKU Snaps Batcats' Nine-Game Streak with 14-6 Win

by:Brooks Holton03/15/16
SONY DSC Well, that wasn't too much fun. After nearly two weeks of dominating opponents with offensive outbursts and come-from-behind wins at The Cliff, Kentucky Baseball (12-4) finally got a taste of its own medicine, losing 14-6 to Western Kentucky (11-5) Tuesday evening. Let's get to the box score and a few notes to put the L in the rear view mirror with SEC play opening up this weekend in Athens. school_logo_large_darkKentucky:

Notes: school_logo_large_darkA night worth forgetting for Kentucky pitching. It's never a good thing when your starter gets pulled after two innings. After sophomore Zach Pop got rocked in the Hilltoppers' six-run second inning, Gary Henderson had to turn to the 'pen for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately, things didn't get too much better from there. A pair of four-run frames in the top of the fourth and eighth closed the door on any comeback attempt the Batcats had in the mix. What the team has to hope for now is a strong outing from Friday starter Zack Brown on the mound against Georgia that'll give the relievers some extra rest after a lot of work tonight. That, and finding the strike zone. The Wildcats combined to issue ten walks tonight, and - as always - they will haunt.   school_logo_large_darkThere were a couple of bright spots from the plate. Junior Marcus Carson hit his second home run of the season to break open the Kentucky scoring in the bottom of the second. It's nice to see some sort of response offensively after getting behind early. Gunnar McNeill also continued his 11-game hitting streak with a single in the bottom of the seventh. JaVon Shelby also drew three walks tonight. Let's hope there's more good news to report in a crucial series against the Bulldogs.   That'll do it for tonight. Stay tuned for a weekend series preview coming in the next few days before the Cats open conference play in Athens on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. @brooksHoltonKSR
