Remember Baylor?

by:Ashley Scoby03/24/12
With all the talk of a potential UK-Louisville matchup in the Final Four, not much is being said of the team that should be at the front of our minds right now: Baylor.  The Cats will take on the Bears tomorrow at about 2:20 tomorrow, so here are a few things you might want to know about our next opponent:   --Baylor is actually just in its second season removed from probation.  After the 2003 murder of Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy by teammate Carlton Dotson, the NCAA launched an investigation that unearthed a lot of nasty things going on at the school, including drug use by the players and impermissible payments to players by the coaching staff.  The penalties, including the probation, were some of the harshest ever handed down by the NCAA that didn't include the death penalty.  So, there's that. --Baylor is 1-6 all-time against Kentucky, and the Cats are currently on a six-game winning streak against the Bears.  The game tomorrow will only be the second all-time matchup between these two teams in the NCAA Tournament.  The first?  The 1948 National Championship game.  I think you know how that went down. --A big storyline between these two teams has to do with a couple of Baylor's freshmen - Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello.  As you probably remember, Kentucky recruited both of these guys last year fairly heavily.  The duo were rumored to be extremely close to committing to Louisville, but changed their minds and committed to Baylor as a package deal.  Miller is now averaging 11 points for the Bears, with Bello contributing 3.4 a game. --Baylor might be one of the few teams that can at least match up with Kentucky's size, if nothing else.  Of the six players they have averaging over 15 minutes, four of those players are at least 6'7.  One of those, Quincy Ace is by all accounts a really fun one to watch.  49% of his career field goals have come via dunks, including 46% of his makes this year.  I don't know how likely it is that half his field goals tomorrow will be dunks, but it's something to watch for. --Even with that size, there isn't anybody on the team averaging more than two blocks per game.  For comparison, Kentucky has Anthony Davis... --Baylor is actually somewhat similar to UK depth-wise, with five players averaging double figures (Kentucky has six).  A lot has been said about the Cats not being "deep" enough, but if that is to become a problem, I don't think it will necessarily come against Baylor. All in all, it should be a good matchup tomorrow, so let's focus on the team we play next before we get too excited about Louisville waiting for us.  It's one game at a time.  Go Cats. @AshleyScobyKSR
