Rex Chapman says it didn't occur to him that his tweet would cause the stir it did

by: Mrs. Tyler Thompson04/09/14@MrsTylerKSR

Rex Chapman just finished up his interview with Matt on KSR, and said that if he could do it all over again, he probably wouldn’t have sent that tweet about Cal and the Lakers before the National Championship game:

If I had to do it again, would I do it beforehand? Probably not. Based on what had transpired, I probably would have waited. At the time, I didn’t know it was going to do that.”

Rex said it simply “didn’t occur” to him that the tweet would get the attention it did, and just thought people would want to know what he had heard. “It just didn’t occur to me. People talked about how they were upset. Hell, I was upset. It upset me. I don’t want him to leave,” Rex said, praising Cal for the job he’s done and stressing that he uses Twitter to interact with fans, not to report news. “I assumed people would want to know what I just found out.”

Does Rex believe Cal is going to leave? No. “There’s never been a time that I haven’t believed John Calipari was going to be the coach,” Rex said. “I believe John Calipari will be back at Kentucky.” He added that these rumors just come about every year. “I think just like every postseason, I think in the next three weeks, John will be linked to six or seven different jobs in the NBA, because of his name, because of his success at Kentucky, his success with NBA guys, guys who are now in the NBA now…It happens every year.”

However, Rex said he stands by his sources. “These are people I’ve known for a long time, I’ve trusted them for a long time,” Rex said. “They’re not BS people. They’re basketball people, they’re insiders.” Rex also mentioned his relationship with the coaching staff and said that he would never want to cause a distraction before the biggest game of the season: “If there was any time I thought I would have been taking something away from them, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Do you believe him?
