Roy Williams is retiring from North Carolina

by: Mrs. Tyler Thompson04/01/21@MrsTylerKSR

Assuming this isn’t an April Fools’ joke, the Roy Williams Era in Chapel Hill is over. North Carolina just announced that Williams is retiring from coaching after 33 seasons as a head coach. A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon at 4 p.m.

Williams, a 1972 UNC graduate, was the Tar Heels’ head coach for 18 years. Prior to that, he coached the Kansas Jayhawks for 15 seasons. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2007 and ranks third in all-time wins with 903. He led UNC to three National Championships (2005, 2009, 2017) and the Tar Heels and Kansas Jayhawks to nine Final Fours. This past season, North Carolina was 18-11 and lost to Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The timing of this announcement is suspect, but several national writers are claiming it is legit. If so, happy trails to a dadgum legend. Someone go check on Fake Barney.
