Running Back AND Field Goal Kicker? Ray Davis Does It All

Ray Davis is a Renaissance Man. The former Kentucky Wildcat learned quite a few lessons while living all across the country. He can do more than just run the damn ball.
The Buffalo Bills were missing a big piece of the puzzle during Friday’s training camp practice. A pelvic problem prohibited Tyler Bass from kicking field goals. No. 22 stepped up to the plate in his absence.
Ray Davis put a new meaning in the term “all-purpose back” when he lined up to kick three field goals from about 30 yards out. He put two of the three between the uprights.
Davis is at his best when he’s running between the tackles and catching passes out of the backfield. During his rookie season in Buffalo, the former Kentucky running back had 631 yards from scrimmage. He caught three touchdowns and rushed for three more, including one in the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens. He’s the first Buffalo Bill to have 3+ rushing and receiving touchdowns in his rookie season.
Unbeknownst to Kentucky football fans, those legs are good for more than running. According to Davis, he once kicked a 57-yard field goal in high school. He didn’t show off that range on Friday. He’s just glad somebody found him a soccer cleat that fit.

“I used to kick in high school. I always told them, if we ever need a guy, I can be that backup guy,” Davis said after practice. “It was fun to come out here and do it. Hopefully, you’ll see me during the season. I had to go get a soccer cleat today so I could step in and be the kicker.”
We are one week away from seeing the ball back in Ray Davis’ hands. The second-fiddle to James Cook will likely receive a lion’s share of the carries when the Bills open preseason play next Saturday at 1 PM ET at home against the New York Giants.
You probably won’t have to wait that long either. The HBO cameras are spending training camp with the Buffalo Bills. Ray Davis may make a cameo when the first episode premieres on Aug. 5 at 9 PM ET.
