There’s a “Help Wanted” sign hanging up at Cardinal Stadium.

Scott Satterfield is running out of assistant coaches. Friday morning Tom Pelssero reported that UofL offensive coordinator Dwayne Ledford is leaving the Cards to become the offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons. The move is sounding alarms on Floyd Street.

Ledford’s departure is significant. Even though he was not with Satterfield at Appalachian State, he was the highest-profile assistant, considered by many as the head coach’s righthand man. It would be akin to Vince Marrow leaving Mark Stoops.

Satterfield isn’t just losing his best assistant coach. It’s the third member of his offensive staff to bolt in the last month. Wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer is the only offensive staffer from 2020 that will remain on the sidelines in 2021.

This departure casts an ominous shadow over the program. Louisville fans can explain all of the moves away by saying, “They couldn’t turn down an opportunity with their friends.” After all, Ledford coached Falcons head coach Arthur Smith in college, outgoing running backs coach Norval McKenzie played with head coach Clark Lea at Vanderbilt and former quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce is returning to App. State to call plays after spending five years in Boone with Satterfield.

Don’t buy their excuses. Satterfield’s assistants all successfully found a way out of UofL shortly after the head coach made a desperate attempt to leave for South Carolina. Why exactly do all of the Cardinal football coaches want to leave town as soon as possible? The motives are unknown, but it’s clear the Satterfield regime is a bad fit at Louisville. It’s only going to get worse before it gets better. Ya hate to see it.
