Kentucky Basketball Scouting Report

Opponent: University of Georgia                 Date: 2/3/15

General
  • 14-6, 5-3 in SEC play. Coming off a 17 point loss @ South Carolina.
  • Playing w/o leading scorer & rebounder Marcus Thornton, plus 2 other rotation players.
  • 3 very good guards in Frazier, Gaines, and Mann who can all get you 20 points.
Personnel #30      G         J.J. Frazier: 5’10’’ 150          SO. [caption id="attachment_172744" align="alignright" width="249"]J.J. is a dynamic playmaker who can really shoot it from 3. Image via onlineathens.com J.J. is a dynamic playmaker who can really shoot it from 3.
Image via onlineathens.com[/caption] He is a quick, aggressive point guard who can really get going from beyond the arc. Frazier has connected on 43.8% (35/80) of his 3-pointers this season. He is a pretty dynamic playmaker, but is just very small. Averaging 11 points and 3.5 assists per game. We cannot let him get going!!! He is coming off of a week where he went 10/11 from beyond the arc and scored 37 versus Mississippi State earning him SEC Player of the Week honors. #12      G         Kenny Gaines: 6’3’’ 200       JR. Gaines is a very good 3-point shooter, 36.8%, and is now being called upon to pick up some additional scoring responsibility in the absence of Marcus Thornton. He is a very skilled guard with a good combination of strength and athleticism. Gaines is scoring 11.7 points per game and coming off of a 2/12 shooting performance in the Bulldogs loss at South Carolina. #4        G         Charles Mann: 6’5’’ 215       JR. [caption id="attachment_172746" align="alignright" width="212"]Mann averages 11.3 & 5.6. Image via georgiadogs.com Mann averages 11.3 & 5.6.
Image via georgiadogs.com[/caption] Mann is the acting best player with Thornton out of the lineup. He is a good athlete and a relentless driver that gets him to the foul line a ton (shooting up 63.7% on FT’s). Mann is definitely a drive first guard that we have to really be ready to defend. Averaging 11.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. #42      F          Nemanja Djurisic: 6’8’’ 230  SR. He is a skilled face-up 4 man who likes to play on the perimeter and shoot it from 3-point range. Djurisic has some strength and is skilled around the hoop, but is at his best facing up and shooting it. He is a very good offensive rebounder and plays with a high motor. The senior is averaging 10.8 points and 5 rebounds per game. #1        F/C      Yante Maten: 6’8’’ 240         FR. Maten is a talented freshman who has started the last couple of games for the Bulldogs. He is a strong presence on the block who can really block shots and rebound. Maten does have some post moves and skill around the hoop, but is best offensive rebounding and finishing plays created by Frazier, Gaines, or Mann off the dribble. __________________________________________________________________________________________ #10      G         Taylor Echols: 6’1’’ 175       SR. The senior guard is mostly getting minutes due to the loss of 3 wing players in the Bulldogs lineup. Echols has only attempted 13 shots on the season, all of which came from 3-point range. He has connected on 4. Looking to make plays for others and simply facilitate the offense. #24      F          Houston Kessler: 6’8’’ 225   RS SO. Kessler, like Echols, has been thrust into some more action due to the injuries to 3 key Bulldog players. He does offer some size and strength and can step away from the basket to space the floor and shoot it out to 3. Good offensive rebounder. Keys to the Game
  • Don’t Let Frazier & Gaines Shoot It In From 3. In the absence of Marcus Thornton, the only way that Georgia can stay in the game tonight in Rupp Arena is if J.J. Frazier and Kenny Gaines get rolling from beyond the arc. Frazier went 7/7 and 3/4 from deep last week, so he is coming in hot. We have to take them away from 3!!!
  • Dominate Down Low. The Bulldogs don’t play anyone over 6’8’’ so we should, as usual, have a significant size advantage down low. They have the talent in the backcourt to play with us, so this game will need to be won in the paint by our big guys.
  • Don’t Look Ahead. With trips to Florida and LSU coming up, and with Georgia missing some key players, this is definitely a potential trap game for us. Don’t be surprised if we see a slow start before we pull away in the 2nd half.
