Former Kentucky guard Sean Woods relieved of head coaching duties at Southern

Former Kentucky guard Sean Woods is one of a few Wildcats who were college basketball head coaches in 2022-23. However, the Indiana native that has his jersey retired at Rupp Arena is now a coaching free agent.
On Wednesday, Southern University announced that Woods will not be returning after five years at the helm.
“At this time, we felt it was necessary to make a change in leadership of our men’s basketball program, over the last five years we have fallen short of our standard and expectations for our men’s basketball program,” Southern athletic director Roman Banks said in a release. “We thank Sean and his family for all they have done for SU and wish them the very best in their journey.”

Woods, 52, led the Jaguars to just two winning seasons in five years. Southern never won more than 17 games under the former Kentucky guard and finished 15-17 in 2022-23. This was Woods’ second stint in the SWAC after leading Mississippi Valley State to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. In between his tenures at Mississippi Valley State and Southern, Woods spent four seasons at Morehead State before resigning after player abuse allegations emerged.
The point guard for Kentucky’s 1992 Elite Eight team owns a 191-232 overall record in his head coaching career.
