SEC sets NCAA Tournament record with 14 schools making the field

The NCAA Selection Committee was a big believer in the toughness of the Southeastern Conference this season.
14 SEC schools made up the 68 teams named to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which was released Sunday night, an all-time record for a single conference in one season. The league produced two 1-seeds and two 2-seeds. Kentucky checked in as a 3-seed with a first-round matchup against Troy in Milwaukee. Only two SEC teams (LSU and South Carolina) did not make the field. Texas just barely snuck in as an 11-seed.

The SEC’s 14 schools in the Big Dance surpass the previous record of 11 schools (out of a possible 16) the Big East saw make it to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Led by Kemba Walker, UConn went on to win the title that season, beating Kentucky in the Final Four along the way. The Huskies were the only Big East team of the 11 that made it beyond the Sweet 16.
Lauded all season as arguably the toughest conference we’ve ever seen in the history of men’s college basketball, the league was rewarded for it by making up over 20 percent of the overall bracket.
