SEC Slant

It was another stellar opening week for the SEC, unless of course you count yourself a Tennessee fan, or a Mississippi St fan, but let's not kid ourselves, none of us have ever met a State fan. Thankfully, there are no devastating injuries to report, nor any ill-timed 1-AA hiccups, and only a handfull of arrests and suspensions. Tennessee: The Vols were dealt a bitchy blow of payback in Berkley to a Cal team comprised of nothing but Tyson Gay's. I hate the Vols, but I hate to see any SEC squad fall at the hands of the Pac-10, where fans live in trees outside of the stadium so they don't have to pay for a ticket. I can't remember the last time the Vols allowed 45 points, but things better improve in a hurry: So. Miss isn't a joke, and Tebow hungry. Next Game: 9/8 Southern Miss Georgia: Yes, the Matt Jones pick of the week turned out to be gravy as the Dawgs pounded Oklahoma St. 35-14, with QB Matthew Stafford looking every bit worthy of the hype. However, Sr. RB Kregg Lumpkin will likely miss several weeks with a thumb injury sustained in the first quarter. That leaves fellow Sr. Thomas Brown and freshman Knowshon Moreno to carry the load. Next Game: 9/8 South Carolina South Carolina: With starting QB Blake Mitchell suspended, the Cocks sleepwalked their way to a 28-14 victory over UL-Lafayette. As you can expect, the OBC was not amused by his team's groggy play, but the best quips were aimed elsewhere. Earlier in the week during a televised segment, part-time analyst and full-time idiot Lee Corso said Spurrier "could never win the SEC at South Carolina, not in 400 years," to which Spurrier aptly replied, "He (Corso) couldn't win anywhere, period." Gotta love it. But the SC Athletic Department took it one step further, launching www.letsshowcorso.com where you can waste your Labor Day chucking football's at Corso's head, a treat for any college football aficianado. Next Game: 9/8 @ Georgia SEC Players of the Week: Offense: Earl Bennett, WR Vanderbilt 13 catches for 223 yards and 3TD's in Vandy's 41-17 win over Richmond. Defense: Dustin Mouzon, DB Ole Miss 9 tackles, 2 INT's (1 returned 99 yds for a TD) and 1 fumble recovery as Ole Miss got a huge 23-21 win down the road at Memphis. Special Teams: Felix Jones, RB/KR Arkansas The Starsky to McFadden's Hutch (or vice versa? I'm young) accounted for 287 all-purpose yards in Arkansas's 46-26 win vs. Troy. Jones had 144 KR yards, including a 90-yard TD return. Freshman: Terry Grant, RB Alabama 18 carries for 134 yards and 3TD's...all in the first half of Bama's 52-6 trouncing of Western Carolina.
