SEC Tournament Thursday Afternoon Notes From Tampa

Good afternoon from Session 1 of Day 2 of the SEC Tournament, where Texas A&M popped Florida’s bubble and LSU advanced to the quarterfinals. Outside of the basketball, it was a rather uneventful day for the event, presumably because of flight complications into Tampa and schools like Missouri and Texas A&M were on the schedule. No one cares about them.

Tonight, we’ll see South Carolina versus Mississippi State and then the one that’s important to us, Vanderbilt versus Alabama. Kentucky will get the winner tomorrow night. For now, the few interesting things from the arena and Tampa as Amalie Arena turns out the lights for a brief intermission between sessions.

Velveeta is killing it as a sponsor

Velveeta is in for Golden Flake as a main sponsor of the SEC Tournament. We hate to lose a longtime brand like Golden Flake, but the Velveeta drip cam has been a popular feature during timeouts.

Golden Flakes chips were always a delightful snack at the SEC Tournament. I hope Velveeta has a cheese fountain to fill that Golden Flake potato chip void.

Kentucky fans are having flight problems

Some of Big Blue Nation’s best soldiers ran into a major travel obstacle due to high winds and storms here in Tampa. KSR’s own Tyler Thompson has spent the better part of her day in the Nashville airport, while some fans at CVG in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky have reported flight cancelations that have sent them back home for the night.

The airport issues could explain the low turnout this afternoon:

Florida fans left unhappy

Part of the reason the crowd is so thin in the Game 2 photo is because Florida fans stormed out of Game 1 covered in tears. The Gators needed to beat A&M to keep those NCAA Tournament hopes alive, but Buzz Williams’ Aggies spoiled the fun for the home state school in overtime.

Another win by A&M and they’re in the tournament conversation. Unfortunately, Auburn is the next opponent. Go Aggies?

Why isn’t Cuonzo Martin on the hot seat?

I’m not here to call for anyone’s job, but Mizzou deserves better than what the Tigers have accomplished on his watch. Today, LSU sent Mizzou home, as expected. Overall, Mizzou is 78-77 in five years and way under .500 in league play at 35-53 in the SEC. No NCAA Tournament wins, either. Only two appearances in his five seasons.

The KSR crew is excited to be back

They drove to Clearwater today to go to Hulk Hogan’s restaurant. To each their own.

Come see us at American Social in Tampa tomorrow morning

KSR’s favorite remote show of the year will be at American Social at 601 S Harbour Island Blvd, only a short stroll away from the arena. Come see us from 10 am to noon as we get you ready for Kentucky’s postseason debut.

A piece of advice, arrive early.
