No Kai Simpson? No problem for the Frederick Douglass Broncos (8-10) in Friday night’s 68-53 victory over the Scott County Cardinals (5-9).

First Quarter: Frederick Douglass 15, Scott County 12

Not one, not two, but three three-pointers in a row for Frederick Douglass’ Armelo Boone allowed the Broncos to take full control of the opening quarter. They lead the Cardinals 15-6 after four minutes of play.

Scott County scored the final six points of the first quarter. Their run was capped by JZ Middleton’s last second deep three-pointer to cut the lead to just three heading into the second.

“I think in the first the first quarter we played for like three and a half minutes to win,” Bronco head coach Jason Moseley said. “Then after that, we just started to get complacent and played not to lose.”

Second Quarter: Scott County 27, Frederick Douglass 26

Back-to-back unnecessary three’s for Scott County that could have given the Cardinals the lead both bounced off the back of the iron. They made up for it on the defensive end, though and through turnovers kept the game close throughout the quarter.

A late flurry to end the half by Middleton gave Scott County their first lead of the evening. He scored five of their last seven points to cap a 7-0 run to end the second.

Haynes led Scott County with 11 first half points (5-12 shooting, 1-6 from three) followed by Middleton’s eight. The Cards went 3-12 from deep in the half, but 7-11 from inside the arc.

Boone led all scorers with 14 thanks to his 75 percent (3-4) three-point performance. Tyson Barrett also had nine at the break. The duo combined for 23 of Douglass’ 26 first half points.

Third Quarter: Broncos 45, Cardinals 37

A fast 11-2 run to begin the second half by the Broncos put them in front 37-29 with 3:58 remaining in the quarter.

“My speech at halftime was that its life or death for us to try to make a run to get that that two or three spot in the district,” Moseley said. “We needed to win tonight, it was a must win situation for us.”

Cardinal head coach Tim Glenn was forced to call a timeout to halt the fun. Boone quickly answered with a three-pointer out of the break to give the Broncos their largest lead of the night at the time at 11.

Frederick Douglass was threatening to run away with the game after a Barrett steal resulting in a dunk with 90 seconds left in the period.

“I told the guys to be aggressive, attack and we will want to play the right way and try to find the open spots and attack them,” Moseley said about getting his players going in the second half.”

Right as Douglass got comfortable, Scott County struck back, cutting a 14-point lead to just eight thanks to yet another Middleton last second trey.

FINAL: Broncos 68, Cardinals 53

The Cardinal offense stalled entering the fourth and Douglass extended their lead to as high as 17 points.

Scott County’s comeback attempt was halted at 12 points. Douglass has now won four of their last five games while Scott County has lost four of their last five.

Boone finished as the night’s leading scorer with 23 points with the help of four three-pointers. Barrett followed closely behind with 22 of his own on 8-13 shooting. The player of the game, however was Tylon Webb for his 14 points (13 in second half), 14 rebounds and four assists.
