Seth McGowan has been Kentucky’s most consistent and explosive offensive weapon in 2025. Some fans were concerned when he was spotted walking toward the locker room during the Texas game. That concern was amplified when they shared on the broadcast that he had been taken to the hospital.

The hospital? That sounds pretty serious, and that’s putting it lightly.

McGowan said on Tuesday that he didn’t want to leave the game. The UK medical staff insisted that they needed to take a closer look at his chest. He hopped on a golf cart and took a ride to the nearby Chandler Hospital.

“We were passing the fans and all the tailgaters,” McGowan recalled. “They had their TVs up. They were looking up like, ‘Damn, I’m pretty sure he was just on the screen. Seth, what’re you doing?‘”

It was a torturous time, not because he was worried about his health. He just wanted to get back on the field.

“I was just thinking about the game,” said the Kentucky running back. “All I knew is I was somewhere I didn’t want to be. I knew I was somewhere where I couldn’t help the team. That was killing me. I yanked the IVs out of my arm because there was nowhere else I needed to be than with my guys… It was eventful for sure, but it had to be done.”

He watched some of the action from a staffer’s phone. On the ride back to Kroger Field, he got back into the zone, thanks to some help from Big Blue Nation.

“Leaving the hospital to the stadium, they were cheering me on (in the parking lot). That’s why I was super fired up to go out there and try to help us win.”

Pass-Catching Nearly Carries the Cats to a Win

He nearly came back and led Kentucky to a victory over Texas. McGowan was on the field for the final drive in regulation when the Cats had 51 seconds and no timeouts to move the ball from their own 27-yard line into field goal range.

After a Cutter Boley scramble on first down, the quarterback checked down to McGowan. It was a dangerous pass to the middle of the field, short of the first down marker, but McGowan found a way to navigate through the crowd of Texas defenders and gain 17 yards. The running back caught one more pass before Jacob Kauwe banged the equalizer through the uprights to force overtime.

McGowan had a reputation as an exceptional pass-catcher before his arrival. It finally manifested with a team-high seven receptions for 68 yards.

“I’m going to give that to Coach Hamdan. He did a great job with Cutter this week on just emphasizing, helping him get through his reads, helping him with his pre-snap ability. That’s the reason why I had so many completions and he was able to get the ball to me really fast, because we were just harping on him all week on speed and decision-making, and trusting that decision-making,” said McGowan.

No Rolex for McGowan

During Saturday’s game, an astute observer noticed something different about the Kentucky running back, and it wasn’t his receiving ability. He had a chrome watch on his left wrist during the game.

“It was a G Shock, not a Rolex,” McGowan shared. “I don’t got Rolex money. You wouldn’t see Rolex money out there.”

The watch was a gift from his girlfriend. He wore it for the first time when the Wildcats wore all-white uniforms against South Carolina. It paired perfectly with the chrome domes on Saturday night. “It kinda went with the uniforms, so I might as well wear it.”
