Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's cousin is one of Virginia Tech's best players
Saturday’s game vs. Virginia Tech will be a family reunion for one Kentucky Basketball player. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a freshman at Virginia Tech and one of the Hokies’ best players so far this season. Through ten games, the 6’5″ guard is averaging 14.4 points and 2.2 assists, and on Saturday, could go head-to-head with his cousin, with whom he shared the backcourt at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy last year.
Earlier this afternoon, Alexander-Walker participated in a teleconference with reporters and opened up about his relationship with Shai.
“That’s like a brother to me,” Alexander-Walker said. “We text or Snapchat every day.”
Although the cousins are each other’s biggest supporters, competition has been a big part of their relationship, going back to battles on the hoop on the family garage growing up.

“It’s gotten heated. I hated losing to him and he hated losing to me,” Alexander-Walker told reporters. “I’m gonna try to talk some trash to him a little bit, have some with it.”
Assuming he’s made available to the media, I look forward to hearing Shai’s side of the story tomorrow. Until then, check out some of Alexander-Walker’s highlights from this season. He’s been so good Sports Illustrated dubbed him a sleeper for the 2018 NBA Draft.
