Six Wildcats Appear in a Seven Round NFL Mock Draft

Two weeks away from the 2019 NFL Draft, we’ve got a pretty good idea of where Josh Allen will land. There’s plenty of uncertainty surrounding the rest of the Wildcats.

Almost every NFL Draft analyst has slotted Allen third overall to the New York Jets. He will be joined by plenty of his UK teammates, just not in the first round. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler provides a clearer picture of where the rest generally stand in his seven round mock draft.

While some mock drafts get crazy and involve multiple trades, Brugler kept it simple. The draft order is stagnant. Fit to a team plays a role, but generally it should give you a better idea of what he’s hearing from NFL personnel about UK’s prospects.

3. Josh Allen — First Round to the New York Jets
57. Lonnie Johnson — Second Round to the Philadelphia Eagles
118. Mike Edwards — Fourth Round to the Green Bay Packers
239. Darius West — Seventh Round to the New England Patriots
241. Chris Westry — Seventh Round to the Dallas Cowboys
251. Derrick Baity — Seventh Round to the L.A. Rams

What’s most intriguing are the omissions. There’s no Benny Snell and no offensive linemen. Westry earned a seventh round nod after posting crazy pro day numbers and visiting the Cowboys. George Asafo-Adjei’s numbers were equally as nuts, but the lack of depth at cornerback benefits UK’s defense backs.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper isn’t going seven rounds deep, but now he’s willing to go three. As expected, Lonnie Johnson was the only other Wildcat to make the cut. Instead of appearing in the second, Kiper has Johnson falling to the third round to the New England Patriots at No. 73 overall.

I made a bet around this time last year that at least seven Wildcats would be drafted. After seeing how bullish Brugler is on UK’s defensive backs, I’m exponentially more confident I’m winning that wager.
