Skal Labissière has successfully worked his way back into NBA consideration.

According to league insider Chris Haynes, Labissière has agreed to a free agent deal with the Washington Wizards ahead of the 2025-26 season. It will likely be a training camp or two-way deal. The 29-year-old saw action in four games with the Sacramento Kings last season after not appearing in an NBA game for over five years. In those four contests, he combined to record five points and three rebounds across 12 total minutes.

Once a five-star high school recruit, Labissière was a one-and-done prospect at Kentucky in 2015-16. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 6.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 36 games for John Calipari‘s Wildcats. Labissière went on to be the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Originally from Haiti, most recruiting services at the time ranked Labissière as the No. 1 overall high school prospect in the 2015 cycle. He was the first in his class to receive an offer from Calipari and the Wildcats, eventually joining a roster that ended up being headlined by Jamal Murray and Tyler Ulis. But his college career didn’t go as expected.

Labissière averaged just 15.8 minutes per game as a Wildcat, starting only half of his 36 appearances. His best performance came in the regular-season finale win over LSU when he dropped 18 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks. He ended his college career with four points and five rebounds in Kentucky’s second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Indiana.

But Labissière still wiggled his way into the first round of the draft the following summer. He saw 93 games of action during his first two seasons (2016-18) with the Kings, averaging 8.7 points and 4.8 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per outing. However, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019 and couldn’t find his footing again. Labissière then played in Puerto Rico and Mexico before returning to Sacramento in 2023-24 and later re-signing with the franchise in 2024-25. He spent the bulk of his time in the G League with the Stockton Kings last season, averaging 16.1 points and 8.7 rebounds in 28 games.

Let’s see what he can do in the nation’s capital.
