Sovereignty wins 151st running of the Kentucky Derby

Sovereignty has won the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
On a rainy Saturday at Churchill Downs, Sovereignty (7-1 odds) was able to fend off the favorite, Journalism (7-2), down the home stretch to win the Run for the Roses with a final time of 2:02.31 to take home $3.1 million of the $5 million purse. Jockey Junior Alvarado won his first-ever Kentucky Derby in the process, while Trainer Bill Mott now has his second Derby winner.
“It means the world to me. My family’s here. I thought I had a great chance,” Alvarado said.
In what was a 19-horse race after two were scratched ahead of race day, Journalism finished in second with Baeza coming in third to complete the trifecta.
According to Churchill Downs officials, this year’s Kentucky Derby drew an attendance of 147,406 people. The second leg of the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes, which is set for May 17 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
