The state of Kentucky is known internationally for its bourbon, fried chicken, and horses. The horse industry is incorporated in some form or fashion at almost every major college athletics program, but nobody embraces it quite like Murray State.

They are the Racers. Before each game, a jockey rides a horse, “Racer One,” onto the field ahead of the football team. After the Call to the Post, the team enters the end zone through the “Jack Wolf Starting Gate.” If that wasn’t horsey enough, they’re taking it one step further this weekend.

On Saturday, Murray State will be rocking a new helmet. The silks of Starlight Racing are emblazoned in navy blue and gold, while diamonds stripe the top of the lids. It’s the perfect college football, horse racing crossover.

If you’re in Western Kentucky and want to see these helmets in person, the Racers will host Southeastern Louisiana at 6 PM ET. Murray State opened the season with a 45-17 loss to East Tennessee State. They aren’t the best FCS program, but by God, they’re going to look good on the gridiron.

Western Kentucky is often credited with some of the best marketing in college football. Big Red is a cheat code. Using the silly monster on uniforms is spectacular.

No offense to Big Red, but Murray State just raised the stakes. I’m a college football, horse racing junky. It’s almost as if they made this helmet specifically for me. It’s beautiful and I need one of these in my office ASAP. Let’s go Raaaaaaaacers!
